What on earth is going on in football today.

I saw this on the news last night. It really does make you wonder what sort of society we live in.

Why on earth do people write such disgraceful things about the people in their football club.

Some blame social media but the truth is it is the people who misuse it that are the problem. Clubs are trying to identify the users who made these disgusting remarks and then ban them. Hopefully they will be identified and the correct action taken.

It is the shameful side of football.

Cyril Regis, Brenden Batson and Remi Moses among others, would tell you it really isn't any worse then back when they were playing.
Just today, we feign horror when it goes on. But from a football stand point, it hasn't changed, no matter how many knees you take. Humanity still posses a hideous ancient intolerant attitude to anything or anyone that just does not look the same in their mentally limited minds.

Whilst you are ultimately right to lay the blame on those using it, I think that social media is a major part of the problem though OB simply because it enables it to happen so easily. The NRA for example, consistently argue their case by saying "it's the shooter not the gun" but ignore the simple logic that restricting the number of guns decreases the risk factor of someone being shot.

You cannot, of course, dis-invent either the gun or social media but knowing how easily both can be abused with sometimes horrendous results you would have thought better policing methods might be considered.

People who wouldn't dare speak such thoughts out aloud or say them to someone face to face can so easily become a key board warrior of the worst sort because there is no-one to challenge that behaviour. The issue then is that they get so used to being able to do so online with little fear of any consequences that they do then begin to pick up the courage to also be vocal about it off-line too. Couple this with a rise in populism and we get neither a reasonably informed society nor a very nice one 😞

For all the attention given to woke-ism in the media, in the real world UK 7/10 women still report that they have been victims of ***ual harassment and well over a third of the BME community still say they have faced racial abuse or discrimination. And no, most people do not call out such behaviour when they witness it.

Taking the knee in solidarity was easy, it cost little but ultimately achieved little. Actively showing racism/ ***ism the "red card" will achieve more but it requires more effort and can cost more. Like yourself, I hope that those responsible are found and dealt with.

I understand what you are saying Omeg and agree with regard to the social media companies making more effort in identifying and stopping those responsible. Also the authorities should be taking robust action against those companies if they do not do so. Further, the authorities should prosecute those people who abuse social media. The problem there is, sentencing. If you provide a custodial sentence it will put more pressure on our prisons and its staff. Prisons are already at breaking point and huge fines would likely not work if the perpetrators do not have the financial resources to pay a fine.

You refer to the NRA and I can see the logic. However, the same could be said about any weapon. Knife crime among young people is on the up across the UK. Guns kill, knives kill, behind every weapon there is a human, a human that has gone wrong. If one is going to kill you will use whatever weapon is available.

Back to the media companies, if you use the old saying “a poor worker only blames his tools,” then it is the user of the tool who is to blame. We should all really understand what is acceptable and what is not. Even the most morally inept person knows what they are doing is wrong. I can’t argue with what you say, in reality, it is a matter for both the user and the provider.

There is, to my mind, a third party to this situation, that being society itself, the society we live in. You did touch on this in your post, in that too many people stand by and fail to challenge behaviour that is unacceptable.

To make the comments highlighted in the BBC report shows the depths some in our society have fallen to. As you say, let’s hope those responsible are identified and dealt with.

In the wake of the George Floyd stuff (however nasty an individual he could be, his death further highlighted the systemic racism in too much of US policing) the BLM and MeToo movements it might be nice to think that we in the UK had moved on from the overt racism, ***ism and homophobia of the 70s and 80s but sadly such elements are clearly still with us. I don't think it will change unless more people stand up and challenge such views but in this current era of populism when so many buy into the views of people like Nige or else internet influencers like Tate, it may be a harder job convincing them.😞
