An elbow to the nose right in front of him and he gives a yellow?! Awful decision. Im staggered that Mehmeti isnt banned and Gilchrist is, and there is nothing the FA are willing to do about that.

There are plenty of decisions that go our way too so these things even themselves out. We are not in a pathetic and embarrassing league position due to bad luck or refereeing decisions. You could say Sheffield could have been 3-0 up before half time.

We are where we are because our manager is clearly way out of his depth and clueless. Other teams in the play offs who have consistently played good football, do not have better players, or spent what we have are doing well because of good tactical managers.

Keep with Mason and honestly think we could be heading for League 1. The crowd have now fully turned on Mason through boos and empty seats and unsold away support. The facts do not lie.

Have to agree that the standard of refereeing in the Championship this season has generally been poor. We appear to have suffered on quite a few occasions and therefore I am hoping that things will even themselves out for the rest of the season. This, of course, does not mean that the standard has improved, just that we have had decisions go our way, even if incorrect.

While VAR is not perfect, and in the past I have questioned its validity, I do believe it would be of benefit if it was used in the Championship.

The manager and the officiating are two separate issues and both are contributing towards our season.

I dont think it does equal out. I havent seen us get a decision all season.

What irks me the most is that he took his time before deciding on a card. He saw Styles on the floor with a potentially broken nose and decided it was a yellow.

I was reluctant to see VAR apply in the Championship and despite my opinion being slightly deflected this season, I am still in the NO VAR camp.
The issue is indeed the standard of refereeing, but I do consider that the poor decisions do balance themselves out. Albeit we are owed a few at present! The Referees? Association need to address the mistakes made and have a relegation / promotion process to award or discipline performances.

Human nature will dictate that certain players get the rough end of the stick as a result of permanently bending the ref?s ear?al a Mulumby and in earlier days, Gayle.

At the moment (!) it remains an unfortunate element of the game which I accept rather than sign up to the VAR fiasco.

However teams push the limits of the rules by having players in what were offside positions to confuse the defenders on where to posistion themselves and then when you see that goal yesterday, its frustrating as VAR isn't there to disallow it.
I'm not sure we play in that way and have we had a penalty this season ?

As an aside stargazer buddy, Heggebo gets manhandled every game with little interest from the ref ! Clearly, something has changed since I played (packed up when in my late 30s - in the 1980s !) There seems to me to be blatant holding, but rarely a foul given in favour of Heggebo
What is the current ruling ? What am I missing?

The slightest touch outside the box usually results in a free kick but the same thing, often far worse, in the penalty area is very rarely punished.

There was a classic case yesterday of Reece James manhandling Morgan Rogers to such an extent that the ref had to intervene three times before booking Morgan Rogers. You couldn't make it up!

Looking at the players in the box awaiting a corner kick these days is more like watching a rugby scrum with all the pulling, shoving and grappling. Touch the keeper and you'll get penalised but otherwise anything seems to go..

I’m unsure of the credibility of this, however I read a commentary from an amateur referee (aren’t they all ) stating that the Officials’ options are limited when the ball is not in play…e.g. the preliminary scrummage before the corner kick is taken.

Any knowledgeable posters able to advise ?

The refereeing system is broken to a degree. If youre a poor ref in the premier league, you get demoted to Championship with no VAR support.

So we effectively get a ref that was poor with technology and then take it off them!

In theory you should allocate the better refs to games without technology but thats never going to happen.

I dont like VAR and I think there is a long way to go before it is truly effective, but longer term we do need it.
