  • Will Burnham be Allowed to Stand?

Can?t see the Tool Makers Son allowing Burnham to stand which will be a threat! What with Council Elections being cancelled and free speech eradicated can?t see it happening!

Starmer did say we would be coming out of the woods in 2026 with more money in our pockets. Who and what was he referring too?

From what I've heard/ read of Burnham, I think he could be a decent MP and also a stronger PM than Starmer. I agree with you that Starmer and his supporters will try and block any route that might allow him to stand but then Burnham has his own influential supporters within the party who could help overturn such objections. So much depends on Burnham himself and his own ambitions. I get the feeling that he is weighing up his chances of success before deciding whether to push himself for it.

By which I mean the top job, of course. He has eventually come out and announced his wish to stand as an MP but has also spoken about his wish to back the current government, not undermine it. Clearly, he has ability but Starmer won't be taking him at his word and will be worrying about the threat from Burnham's own ambitions.

I could be wrong but surely if he relinquished his post as Lord Mayor of Manchester he would be allowed to stand as an MP.

Mahmood doesn't rule out all-women shortlist to block Burnham standing as MP
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood - who is also chair of the Labour Party's National Executive Committee (NEC) - is speaking to Trevor Phillips.
The first big question is about Andy Burnham - and whether he'll be allowed to run for the Gorton and Denton by-election.

Disgusting if he?s blocked and it?s on par with council elections being massively delayed! I thought we lived in a democracy 😂

Apparently he has been blocked. That says it all about the Labour Party. The only difference between us and the Russian political system is that we do not kill off opponents - yet!

              From RTE website....

British Labour Party politician Andy Burnham, regarded as a potential leadership rival to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has been blocked from trying to return to parliament by Labour's governing body, sources close to the body have said.

Mr Burnham, one of the party's most high-profile politicians and an elected mayor in Manchester, said yesterday he wanted to become Labour's candidate to replace a MP who resigned last week.
Nothing to see here. Move along now people....😇

I said to my son a few months ago that I would only ever consider voting Labour again was if he was in charge. Sad state of affairs with Labour at the moment.

Burn ham is, I believe, a far more competent politician that Starmer but is further to the left, so certainly not to my liking. The doesn’t appear to be any centre-right politician on the scene at the moment, it’s one extreme or the other; oh, and Starmer’s cardboard cutouts somewhere left of centre. We’re doomed!

The prime minister voted personally to stop his potential rival's bid to return to Westminster. Andy Burnham will remain as Manchester mayor.

Yeah I bet he did! Running very scared too! Does not want a leadership challenge - could not give a f uck what the public think and delaying strategically all the council elections because he knows Reform will embarrass Labour!

It would be good if the King went to Parliament, dissolved it and appointed someone competent to put together a government of national unity and get the country back on its feet again.

It’s a shame as I have always found Burnham to be a good, authentic leader and someone to get behind. That said, the last thing Starmer needed was more division, in a party already divided.

We need more good left leaning leaders like Burnham to bring a bit of balance. The current left sided crop range from underwhelming to a total disaster.

The question is what do most of the public want after seeing this Labour Government in power?

We all know the answer to that which is the clue why many local elections are being hugely delayed!!

I actually went to Manchester a few weeks ago and was shocked at the s hit hole it?s become and that was day time.

To be honest, Starmer can't win with you either way Al.

                              Trump criticises our military....
                              You....."Starmer is weak"

I'm not saying Labour do everything right, they don't. They have a lot of flaws and fair criticism against that is understandable.

I can't speak for what most people want, but I can speak for me. The Conservatives were in power for 15 years and they were pretty awful. Reform will be a car crash if they get in. The Greens scare the life out of me. So what is the alternative?

Starmer is at least a decent man, who speaks with intelligence and thought. That is far better than what they have in the US, and its far better than the alternative party leaders in this country.
