  • Johnston - Diakite and Maja

I would like all three to start on Saturday.

Johnston on his day can be better than Fellows and Grant - better at taking men on!

Mowatt and Molumby offer no pace or creativity - rather try Diakite!

Maja is the one to score a half chance!

Maja for me is the big miss of all our injuries. When he went missing last season, the goals pretty much dried up. If he is fit, he needs to start.
Johnston is a strange one. On his day he can be a game winner. But as the Irish national team find out, that proves to be rare. I think Roy keane said of his....if he could sort out his inconsistent form he would be hugely improved. As for Diakite , I know too little about him and his performances.

I think Heggebo did alright yesterday, he battled well and held the ball up. As a CF, he also needs to put the ball in the net but hopefully this will come. That said, be good to have Maja back.

As for Diakite, I think we will see more of him this season. Both Molumby and Mowatt did well yesterday but I believe Diakite will offer more.

Mason has already played Johnston on the right so I think we may see him replace Fellows there with Grant kept on the left. Whilst he is not as creative as Mikey or Tom, there is no doubting Karlan's work rate and whilst I believe he is better playing off the shoulder as a number 10 than as a wide winger, his contribution to the team will probably ensure his starting place.

Good points Omeg. That said still feel Mowatt and Molumby playing together is to static

Don't disagree with you Al. They actually seem to work quite well with each other but certainly they don't provide much in the way of creativity going forward (although Molumby did try against Blackburn tbh).

Depending on the opposition, I would be inclined to start Diakite with one or the other playing alongside him.

Agree Omeg. Trouble with Molumby he blows hot and cold and Ireland fans have booed him before. So if Molumby is not consistent we have Mowatt who offers no pace. If the midfield could hold and control the ball more it would stop the relentless pressing of the opposition, Diakite is raw but has good potential.

I think well see the best of Diakite this season. Mikey always causes the Opp defence problems. Theres a lot to like about the squad even if it is a bit short on numbers.

Indeed boingy buddy, a lot to like.

Phillips - a proper CH. Leads by example (which has been so sadly missing) and a great fit with Heggem. (Memories of Olsen & McCauley)
Heggebo - a muscular and quick presence. Great to see him pressing. A goal will enhance and settle his performances.
                Price - his class continues.

Styles worries me defensively, as the lofted ball is, and will be, continually used against him. Heggem has covered this scenario well, so no issues so far, but a weakness. His attacking play clearly compensates. Some training ground tactics with his throw-ins are needed.

The swapping of wingers will become a standard practice, as Fellows’ attributes up the right wing are now anticipated.

Finally, great to see the Furlong long throw used more often and delighted to have not seen the previous constant, pedestrian, 2 yard walking pass / play out from the back.

Very early days, but happy so far.
