  • Mason watch

    From Saturday.

Anyone else think we played very narrow all over pitch? I thought both Fellows and Grant had poor games because when they got the ball it was rarely in a position where they were able to run at their full back. It was so pronounced it must be that Mason demanded they play that way. If this is his way I see little future for Fellows as you have taken away the one thing he is very very good at. I also think we struggled to find an out ball.At the other end of the pitch the Blackburn wing backs had the freedom of the park. Fortunately they weren't good enough to make it count.

Also player most forward most often was Price not Heggebo. 4-4-2?

Every time I looked up Mason was still and quiet in the technical area it was Abella that was animated.

I know a wins a win but I was disappointed in our performance and I am less optimistic for the season than pre match. I thought I was watching 2 poor performances. So hope I'm wrong.

Agree with you. Thought both Fellows and Grant were not great. Still question Mowatt and Molumby in the side together because neither has the creativity or talent.

Glad Mikey is in tonight and hope Maja is being saved for Wrexham. Just hope Wallace is not in the starting line up for Wrexham as have a feeling he will - sadly he?s over the hill and offers nothing.

Mid table at best as honestly feel we are weaker this season if you take into the equation Griffiths. Disappointed in the recruitment if I?m honest as expected better.

The match at Wrexham will tell a story!

Funny how we have different lenses. I thought we looked well drilled, fit and a proper team.

Again, tonight I think you can see what Masons trying to do and itÂ’s refreshing.

We arent going to succeed in this league due to our quality. We will always be outgunned by the sides with parachute payments. Boxing clever is how we succeed and from what I have seen so far, Mason gives us that. I have been really impressed and everything coming out of the club is positive.

Fellows is a good player, not amazing. Price is amazing and Mason is getting the best out of him.

Impressed tonight as both Campbell and Williams been excellent. First team perhaps soon as better than what we have. Diakite also adds another threat as midfield less static.

Playing it around more than Saturday and some nice football. Wish we had that Derby keeper!

Although we lost, I saw some impressive football tonight. Moved the ball far quicker than we ever did under Corberan and Mowbray and players pressed the ball better. Gives me hope for the rest of the season if we keep that up,

I agree Tipp but you can?t play without a keeper! Wildsmith is s hit and Griffiths not much better.

Taylor not good enough and no surprise Wallace hit the penalty no harder than a granny would!

Shame as Price, Diakite, Williams and Campbell especially were excellent.

The lack of a decent decent will cost us big time!

I think Mason's substitutions cost us the game. Just 1 nil up he took off Price, Johnston and Fellows who were all causing Derby problems. He replaced them with Wallace, Molumby and Grant who contributed nothing (except 2 missing pens) which allowed a shockingly poor Derby team to apply way more pressure in those last few minutes than in the whole of the previous 80. Bit similar to Saturday when again his first substitution was our best player. Just don't get it.

We were by far the best side, as was often the case last season, and then we drop back and let the opposition take the initiative in the the last fif**** minutes or so. Why make wholesale substitutions when there is no need? Forget about the next game, concentrate on the current game, win it and only then think of the next match.

I was surprised to read the positive comments. We are too slow getting it forward allowing opposition to set up. We are not good enough esp with iffy keepers to defend a 1-0 lead . I say again Mason is not the answer. He makes silly subs and wants to play premiership out from the back stuff - it won't work in this league . I have said from day 1 Mason is not the answer - mid table at best

I didnt see the match but the stats were totally us. Every stat we dominated. Have to take your chances and thats where we fall short 20 goal attempts to 4 tells you everything. 6 on target to their 1. Price and Mowatt our highest stat. I think Mowatt is going to have a good season. Campbell and Wildsmith the only players not to reach 7 and above (6.6) Good team performance. Vickers man of the match.

In reflection I thought we played well especially the defence. Campbell was excellent - Williams looked an improvement on Furlong and Diakite was super along with Price.

We just need another decent midfielder who is creative with talent and a keeper.

For me I would start with Diakite and Maja Saturday and introduce Campbell and if Furlong is having a nightmare again have Williams on from the bench.

                      Lots to be positive for

I agree there were a number of performances to be please with but this thread was meant to be about the performance of our new manager not players. On Saturday I thought we were too narrow and his substitutions have cost us a cup tie and almost 2 points.

From the TV view I had it was Abella doing most of the talking in the break after 90 minutes

To be clear I am not against the appointment of Mason and I don't want this to turn into a witch hunt. If we play well on Saturday whether narrow or wide and his subs have a positive influence I'll be the first to post well done.

I was concerned to see a return to the - keeper roll out to full back - tactic and more so, a return to some pedestrian penalty area - pass around the back four - protocol. To be fair, it seemed to work as we kept possession and eventually moved the ball forward. However, I maintain that we will regret a continuance of this practise.
The previous match with Griffiths in goal produced a more direct ball out to both wings. Much better for my blood pressure.

On Saturday I was encouraged by how often Phillip's first thought was to play the ball forward usually with purpose sometimes with an element of hoof. Campbell running at the defence on Tuesday was a sight to behold. Did it come naturally or under instruction. More please from both!

And his subs won us the game today. Well done
