  • Southgate v Tuchel

Confirmation for me with Southgate we played with the 'brake on'

3-2 up v Croatia and 20 mins to go time for subs. Rashford and Saka straight swaps for Gordon and Madueke. Rice is coming off Southgate thinks keep what we have and puts on Henderson.

Tuchel goes let's continue to attack, get another and goes for Rogers.

Only 1 game but more of the same thinking please.

I only managed to catch highlights of the game but, based on what I saw, I would find it very hard not to agree with you. I think that Southgate must be given credit for what he brought to the job of England manager and some of the changes he made (it's interesting to compare the documentary on BBC about the failure of the "Golden Generation" with the "Dear England" drama featuring Joseph Fiennes as Southgate) but, ultimately, his approach was perhaps too over cautious. England certainly appeared, as you say, to be "playing with the brakes on" in the later games under his tenure and -from what I saw in the highlights-it was nice to see a more free-flowing, attacking style under Tuchel and his substitutions proved spot on. My only concern is the defensive vulnerability that we seemed to have at times. There are a few teams this world cup that play in similar fashion by really going for it and playing with attacking intensity but I do wonder whether they can't all be undone if they don't also pay enough attention to their defence? Whilst this style of football is definitely more entertaining to watch, you still have to score more goals than you concede.

Southgate did well to introduce harmony to the squad, making it an actual squad as opposed to a disparate collection of players. At the same time I think he overthought the Euros and got caught between tactical stools. It was time for a change. Tuchel raised a few eye brows with some of his omissions but I'm glad to see us playing with a bit more tempo now and pressing the opposition into mistakes. Also very happy to note Tuchel isn't afraid to upset the dressing room apple cart. He says things as he sees them, doesn't seem to stand on ceremony or pander to egos. Here's hoping for more positive results and a long stay in the tournament.

Tuchel told them at half time to go and play, and if they lose they lose. Thankfully they did play and didn't lose
