  • Points deduction?

It has just emerged that we could be undergoing a points deduction for a breach of financial rules. This could undermine everything Morrison has been doing in recent weeks.

The question is, why has this just come out and if there's any substance to it then I can't believe it would apply to this season as it's too close to its conclusion.

We have been working with the EFL for the last 18 mths , with regards tranfers in and out .

Let's hope this is just speculation to sell copy. I too find it very strange that this story is coming out now at this late stage in the season and I had previously read that we had been working with the EFL to ensure that we kept within the rules?

Our accounts were filed in late March. So that's what triggered the potential points deduction.
We're not Man City. Bilcul are not backed by an oil rich nation. Therefore we'll probably get 6 points deducted even though unlike Leicester and Man City we've tried to work with the EFL to prevent this from happening.
In hindsight we should've hung onto Fellows, BTA and Heggem because selling them has produced zero benefit

West Bromwich Albion have been officially charged by the English Football League (EFL) for allegedly breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2024/25 season. The club now faces a potential points deduction that could severely impact their battle to avoid relegation from the Championship.Key Details of the ChargeThe Breach: The charge relates to financial accounts from the 2024/25 campaign. While reports suggest the breach is "not significant" and only a minor amount over permitted loss limits, strict EFL guidelines require sanctions to be applied.Potential Sanctions: West Brom could face a points deduction, a transfer ban, or a fine. For comparison, Leicester City received a six-point deduction in February 2026 for similar breaches.Current Status: The club has 14 days to respond to the charge.Timing of Punishment: Under EFL rules, sanctions for previous-season breaches should be applied in the following term (the current 2025/26 season). However, West Brom is reportedly pushing to delay any penalties until the 2026/27 season.Impact on Relegation BattleThe charge comes at a critical time, with only four fixtures remaining in the Championship season.League Position: West Brom currently sits in 20th place, just two points above the relegation zone.Immediate Threat: If a points deduction is applied immediately, the club would likely drop into the bottom three, joining Sheffield Wednesday (already relegated) and Leicester City in the relegation spots.Survival Rivals: Rivals such as Oxford United and Portsmouth could benefit significantly if West Brom is docked points before the season concludes. How would you like to track West Brom's final fixtures or the potential impact on the Championship table?

West Bromwich Albion insist they have "fully complied" with EFL's profit and sustainability rules after reports they could face a points deduction

Deduction could be applied after the season has ended. It could be 2 points

Looking at the rules, if the breach was for 2024/25 then the deduction would be for this season 😞

Aside from the glaringly obvious inconsistency between how breaches of financial rules are dealt with in the Greed League Prem (delays and fines) and the Championship (points deductions), the big question is why is this even coming to light at this late stage if the club have being working with the EFL over the past 18 months in order to avoid precisely this?

Some have commented that we may as well have kept Heggem, Palmer and Fellows which might well have gained us a higher league position that would then have meant that any eventual points deductions would not have resulted in relegation. I can see their point, even if doing so would clearly still not resolve our financial situation.

Definitely need wins from our remaining games now rather than draws but it cannot be good for either Morrison or the players to have this hanging over their heads as well as everything else!

I can see a points reduction at the end of the season of 2/3 points so we need goals to secure four wins. Maybe Heggebo will get three at Preston!

I was one that maintained that we should not have sold our best players; with those players still on board, we would most likely to have been in the playoff positions, so even with the maximum points deduction, we would be no worse off than we are now but with a squad easily capable of staying up.

Football finances are now ridiculous, almost all clubs in the Championship have recorded losses, with all the money supposedly swilling around in football, this should not be the case.

I suppose the club cant have known that Leicester were getting a 6 point deduction and not 12. We also have the 25/26 accounts to think about, as you can breach twice in 2 years if done knowingly.

All a bit unsettling but the facts will come out soon Im sure.

You did! Great players sold and replacements are inferior. Campbell is decent but certainly no Heggem. Fellows is a different class to Wallace who was on the decline 2 years ago and his legs have gone. Palmer is a different class to both our two keepers. Caleb was the future like our other promising youngsters, We also were robbed of almost 5 million for Heggebo whose feet get tangled up and God the loans have been awful with Junior, Mustapha and the lazy Vile kid who is certainly no better than Bostock. Bany does exist somewhere 😭

Please God let?s get rid of Wallace, Dike, Maja and try and sell Mowatt and Grant. Coventry were promoted for a reason - good quality signings - young pacey players and an experienced manager! We need fresh vision from a coach and staff so things are different next season! I am sure Lampard and his staff don?t coach backwards and sideways football.
