I've no problem with people being proud of being English and flying the flag in celebration but I've always been a bit mystified about why St. George was chosen to represent us. Yes, I know he was an early Christian martyr and he slew the Dragon and all that but wasn't he supposedly a Greek who served in the Roman army? I know we are a mongrel race (Iberian, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Jute, Scandinavian, Norman etc. ) with many more recent members having Asian, African and Eastern European heritage but where does that come in?
Anyhow, Happy St.George's Day to all !🍺🍷

Good point but you could say the same about many flags - why the detail and colours. With some of my family being Spanish they proudly fly their flags like the USA on every government building and even shops and properties. I think that?s super and the way it should be,Originally posted by Omegstrat6 View PostI've no problem with people being proud of being English and flying the flag in celebration but I've always been a bit mystified about why St. George was chosen to represent us. Interesting point Al, but flag flying in this country has sadly been a bit of a tricky topic lately.
On one hand, whenever England get anywhere near European or World Cup finals you start to see cars everywhere decked out with flags and supermarkets selling hats, mugs and anything else they can put the Cross of St. George on, but on the other the Union Jack particularly has probably been viewed as being a bit too jingoistic and a hang over from the days of colonialism and the celebration of Empire Day.
The success of British pop music and arts in the 60s provided a brief resurgence for the popularity of the Union Jack and in the 90s BritPop gave it a similar brief revival but overall the flag is sadly now tarnished with its association with the racist far right. Whether or not more people displaying the Union Jack can reclaim it from its appropriation by the far Right is a good question. Both the Conservatives and Labour parties have attempted to promote it as a symbol of unity rather than of division, but neither have really achieved that.
As you say, in the US you see the Stars and Stripes everywhere despite Trump and MAGA trying to claim it for themselves. Whether or not we see our own national flag displayed in such prominence here though seems pretty doubtful.

Personally Omeg - I would place the St George?s flag in every school and every government building including places of worship. In other countries like Spain and the USA any migrants are accepting of the fact they have entered a different country and culture and embrace it. When I lived in Spain I was fluent in the language within a year and embraced their culture and way of life.Originally posted by Omegstrat6 View PostInteresting point Al, but flag flying in this country has sadly been a bit of a tricky topic lately.

Surely if a person enters this country they are doing so because they love our flag, culture and way of life as opposed to the benefits. Don?t get me wrong all religions should be respected but this is a different issue. Plenty of Muslims who are proud to be British or American or Spanish.
The problem in this country is caused by the white left ie nutters like Corbyn and that absolute idiot who runs Green.

In my personal experience there are times when it's best not over think things Omeg. This is coming from someone who regularly over thinks things by the way. I'm English on my dad's side and Irish on my mom's; and Scottish, German and lord knows what else.Originally posted by Omegstrat6 View PostI've no problem with people being proud of being English and flying the flag in celebration but I've always been a bit mystified about why St. George was chosen to represent us. My patron Saint's are mixed and varied. Saint George isn't English and is famed for killing a dragon. Whilst I've shagged a few I can honestly say I've never killed one. As for Saint Patrick he wasn't Irish either but a Romanized Briton who was sold into Irish slavery following a raid.
I don't know whether Patrick ever slayed a dragon, shagged one, killed a snake or ever got around to fking a leprechaun but I'm more than happy to raise a glass to both him and George (who's birth name probably wasn't George anyway 😉 ) .

Morning Omeg. The very sad truth of the matter is that I have been unfashionably busy of late. So much so it's even eaten into my drinking time never mind my posting time. Lots of things to do and only so many hours to do them in. Have a good one 😎 .Originally posted by Omegstrat6 View PostYou're probably right 68, astute as ever!😀
