I think the Burnham development is interesting btw. For starters, the MP who is willing up his seat was a more centrist/ right leaning member of the party so would not be a natural ally of Burnham's. This has to be an indication of the level of concern over Starmer's leadership by many in the Labour Party. I have a feeling that other mooted front runners like Streeting and Raynor may ultimately put personal ambition aside and back Burnham in order to try and get some level of unity back for the party.

Secondly-as you say-there is no guarantee that Burnham would win that seat in any case It's a big decision for Burnham to make. If he stands and can persuade some of those who might currently endorse Reform to go back to supporting Labour and he wins the seat, then that can only further endorse any ambitions he has to become party leader and PM. If he can win by a decent margin especially, then the party faithful will surely feel more confident that he might similarly turn the perception of the Labour Party around on a national level. If Burnham loses, however, then he loses big time. No longer mayor of Manchester but no MP either, let alone PM.

Burnham does NOT lose the mayoralty if he runs for this seat.

He only has to give up his seat IF he wins the bye election, if he loses he goes back to being mayor.

Starmer issues warning to protesters this weekend about division. This is why the man is hated and does not read the room. Does Starmer issue warning about the numerous pro Palestinian marches which cause incitement and arrests? No and these marches will have caused some of the hatred towards the peaceful Jewish communities.

I stand corrected Al, I didn't think that that bit through properly (how very Starmer of me &#128513 I didn't realise that being elected mayor didn't preclude him from standing whilst still serving his term in the role. Guess it's like most jobs- you are always free to leave or apply for others.

Anyhow, it certainly makes it more likely that Burnham will stand although the risk is obviously still there around whether he can win the seat of not. If he fails to do so this will severely damage, if not end, any political ambitions he may have and if he wins, but only just scrapes in, this may damage any hopes he has of being party leader.

Hi Omeg - can?t decide whether to watch the cup final or not! I honestly think Burnham will lose but as you said nothing will change and if anything he more left than two tier albeit more appealing to some. For me he?s another Tony Blair!

Had the same indecision myself over the cup final Al. The sun is now out but the earlier rain meant I cant get the grass mown so have opted to watch. Not a great game though. Doubtless some skilful players on both sides but Chelsea have been able to successfully stifle Man City, doubling up on players like Doku for example, and it's been a quite stop-start game. Chelsea actually look better in the attacking movements they have had than City. The main problem, of course, is that I'm also not particularly bothered about either team 😁
