For the integrity of the game, the decision to expel and to deduct Southampton points must not be overturned. What compounds it is that they have previous. It would also cause complete chaos and would be unfair on Hull as they have prepared to play one team and then find out that they are playing another. Surely this new panel could not change it again and reinstate Southampton.

This is all down to Southampton and they should be the ones harshly punished for causing the mess.

They did Tipps buddy during the reign of Eric Ramsey. Unfortunately the spies needed counselling and therapy having filmed it.

Southampton fans understandably unhappy but I'm not sure that their claims of the EFL decision being disproportionate to the offence stands up. It may be perfectly true that spying on another club is no guarantee of them winning the game against them (and all clubs surely watch videos of their opponents as part of their preparation for games to try and pick out particular tactics or players) but it is very clearly in the rules. Southampton knew this but still went ahead and did so. To most clubs, a fine is pretty ineffective and forfeiting the game seems a better deterrent. In this case, it happened to be an important play off game but, tough I'm afraid.

The complications will come-as Matt alluded to- if further investigations reveal that they have done similar in other matches. Using the same punishment as before to ensure the fairness of consistency would then mean them forfeiting any game they were found guilty of doing the same at which would mean a re-calculation of the table.

In most cases, while the affected clubs would then gain more points, it very likely would not alter whether or not they would have either avoided relegation or got into the play offs. Even so, it's a can of worms and, as Al and OB have said, could drag on with affected clubs seeking compensation.

Some might argue that a more fitting punishment would have been for Southampton to have had to replay the Boro game to decide the play off but how could you possibly then apply the fairness of consistency to any other games they might be found guilty of spying for. This is very likely why this was not considered a suitable punishment by the EFL, which left either the options of a fine, a retrospective points deduction or forfeiting the game. Unless any points deduction was 10 points (very unlikely) then it would not alter which teams ended up in the play off positions anyway as Southampton had 80 and Wrexham 71 points.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the decision to expel Saints were to be overturned, it would remove the problem of getting final tickets to ‘Boro fans, would be most convenient. Such a decision would stink, though.

I do not see how getting tickets to ‘Borough fans should be a problem. They are already on sale on a first come first served basis. If they did overturn the decision it would cause more mayhem than the worth of it. In my opinion, they must stick to it. Southampton have caused this problem so they just have to accept it.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has compared the club's punishment to like being "put on trial for murder, when all you've done is stolen a Mars bar".

Never liked that moron anyway! For appealing they should increase the points deduction 😭

As I have said, I don’t trust the EFL, it would not surprise me one bit if the let the scoundrels off.

I wonder if Wrexham will sue them , having lost 1-5 during the Cheats unbeaten run, would love it if they have CCTV footage .

Good news my fears of the EFL bottling it were unfounded, I am pleased to say. I think Saints fans will find themselves being watched through binoculars at matches next season!
