  • Graham Lovett

He was one of the WBA greats who was in the FA Cup winning side of 1968. Sadly he was involved in 2 serious car crashes whilst an Albion player. The last one effectively ended his football career.

I recently made a film of the Quinton area for A WALK WITH PHIL. The reason I post this is I believe i filmed the junction where he had that final accident in 1969 but can anyone confirm it was here? The section of the video in question is at 13.42

Hello Phil, sorry mate but I can't help on which junction it was. What I can say is that I had the privilege of meeting Graham at a supporters do when he came back to the UK.

Can't have been all that long before he passed away to be fair. What a genuinely lovely and unassuming fella with a great sense of humour.

Such a shame his career was blighted by those car accidents and terrible injuries. Tell you something though, there was no sense of bitterness about it. Anyway, take care chap 😎 .

Graham Lovatt and Peter Knowles were that good, they could of had 100 England caps each .
Would have loved to seen this pair together .
In the school holidays we used watch Albion train at Spring rd , then we found out they used to go to the gala baths for a swim after training .
So we take our trunks and towels and catch a lift with them , I remember Cambell Crawford telling us down get in Shuvits car he a mad driver .
Not long after he had his ist bad accident .
I also met him and and we had a selfie with him , just before he died .
A top ma player and a good bloke .

Morning Phil. Had a chance to speed view your video last night. The brewery in question you were asking about which was on the corner of High Street and Bissell in Quinton was a Cheshire's brewery. As in owned by Edward Cheshire. He had another brewery on Windmill Lane in Smethwick which I remember my dad telling me about one time when we used to walk down to Woodlands Street Club on a Sunday. Woodlands Street Club was one of his/our many stop offs back in the day when I was a kid. Google also tells me that Edward Cheshire owned several pubs across Smethwick, Birmingham and the Black Country. Cheshire's Brewery was later bought out by M+B. Hope this helps .

Makes you feel old Phil. When I was around 12 I played football in Selly Oak park with my grandad and took a walk for the first time in there since a kid. It was like time had frozen and seemed like a few years ago in the exact spot where we played - not 50 years FFS. I even remembered the spots more or less where we had jumpers for goals!

Haven't been to Selly Oak park for yonks. Much like yourself, my Nan and auntie used to take us there as kids when we visited them. Used to meet up with our cousins there for a game of footie. I also remember that they used to take us to Cannon Hill quite a bit. Other places we used to go to with my mum and dad were the Lickey Hills and, occasionally, Malvern. The best part of these visits was sliding down the quite steep hills on a piece of cardboard just as my mum used to do in her childhood. Do kids still do this I wonder?

I loved the Lickey Hills too Omeg and we used to take our old English sheepdog called Blue there. Kids in our days actually played - I remember jumping about hiding in about eight large cardboard boxes.

Probably now why I hate kids at meal times and on planes on screens playing games. It?s the lazy option for parents. I remember when I was a kid going to the museums and ********* which was fun but kids of today think it?s boring.

J have a distinct memory of Lovett's name being booed in the BRE when read out pre match after he came back from his second crash. His form wasn't great but I do recall feeling ashamed of the booing.

Pleasure Phil. Bit of trivia for you. My cousin got married at that church in Quinton on May 1st 1976. The wedding reception was down the road at Halesowen Cycling Club. How did I remember their 50th Wedding Anniversary given I was only eight years old when they got married?

Simple. They had the FA Cup Final playing on the TV in the background at said wedding reception, one of very few live TV games back in the day which added to the romance of the FA Cup. Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0 in that FA Cup Final on May 1st 1976 by the way 😉 .
