Not read "Spycatcher" but Ben Macintyre's "A spy amongst friends" which focuses on Kim Philby is also a good read Soulman if you've not already done so. The book really highlights the problem of the "old boy" network in the security services of the time as well as some stunning naivety. The book was made into a tv series recently with Guy Pierce and Damien Lewis and, like the older "Fourth Man" movie with Ian Richardson as Blunt and Anthony Hopkins as Burgess, is worth watching for anyone interested in the Cambridge Five. Easy to see where Le Carre (who, like Ian Fleming served in the security services) got much of his inspiration!

Quite unreal that someone like Blunt was not unmasked and dealt with so much earlier -though I'm sure you are right in that there must have been some fear of tainting the Royal Family by connection if not an outright suspicion that Blunt might have been privy to information on them that could be damaging. Even the "Iron Lady" herself seemed to be wary.

I used to love an old author of crime books which you can still get and found them captivating from page 1 - James Hadley Chase.

      Anyone read his books?
