  • Yet Another Knife Attack

Shocking once again! When is Starmer going to ban ALL knives as surely enough is enough now. Our citizens need to be protected and girls allowed to walk the streets in safety!

The statement in full from Northern Irish police
A man in his 30s, believed to be Somalian, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault involving a knife in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast on Monday night, 8th June, shortly after 10.30pm.
    He remains in police custody.
The injured man, aged in his 40s, is in hospital where his condition is described as serious.
The attack has left the man with significant injuries to his face, neck and back.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said: "This is a deeply concerning assault and I have declared this a critical incident. We have commenced an investigation to establish a motive.
"This brutal attack will have sent shockwaves through the community causing real concern. I want to reassure the local community that we are treating this attack with the utmost seriousness. Our investigation is continuing at pace. Community safety is our priority and we are currently engaging with local representatives and residents to provide reassurance and support.
"Our officers were on the scene within minutes and we wish to acknowledge the members of the public who strived to save the man from further attack. Their willingness to step forward to help another person shows incredible bravery and community spirit.

Head of policing body calls for 'calm and cool heads'
The Chair of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland is asking the public to "let the PSNI do its job with all the resources it can utilise".
A statement from Liam Kelly says: "There is understandable anger and frustration in the community, but that shouldn?t lead to any unrest or disruptive action on our streets.
?This is a time for calm and cool heads to prevail and not sudden, reactive action that could cause fear, disorder and unrest.
?This was a shocking and barbaric attack and my thoughts are with the victim."

      (Above quoted from the BBC)

Let?s hope his advice is followed. The last thing we need is another lynch mob out there taking more police resources and time when they are needed elsewhere.

Very sad situation but restraint is needed and time given so that it can be dealt with appropriately.

Fortunately, I no longer eat bread and don’t buy steak, so I have no use for those styles of bladed weapons!

If it were possible, I suspect that banning religion would have a greater benefit than banning certain categories of knives.

Yeah a very important ban for the future of the younger generation.

If you were in charge you would be taking away our bread knives. Who would be your deputy leader David Blunt-it or Liz Truss-tyknife?

Knife crime is out of control, especially amongst the young and it is certainly not just immigrants who are guilty of using such weapons, nor is it just young males involved.

These days even some supermarkets no longer sell kitchen knives amongst their utensil ranges other than standard cutlery knives because of this endemic but that clearly is not stopping under age kids getting hold of them.

The problem is that there are no easy solutions to this and a myriad of factors feed into the issue. Social Media is one factor that has a negative impact but (as mentioned in another thread) so does the recent change in societal behaviour post covid. It seems to me that too many young people have no respect and no boundaries, too many parents fail in their responsibilities, teachers are hampered by rules that work against previous disciplinary standards (which also puts them at personal risk) and a lack of resources and a failing legal system mean that Police responses are far from effective enough.

Then there is also the issue of punishment. Those who have wounded or killed should clearly face imprisonment but what of being caught with a knife/weapon? In the case of either illegal immigrants or asylum seekers then the answer might appear simple enough-just fast -track deportation back to their homeland. But what about those of British citizenship? Even if the Police had the resources and legal backing to carry out proactive stop and searches, how would you punish the offenders caught with such knives/ weapons on them, particularly if they are under age? To do nothing is clearly not the answer and there must obviously be consequences that will act as a deterrent but do we force offenders to go through re-education on knife crime, do we tag them, do we fine their parents in the hope that they take some responsibility for the actions of their children? Some or all of these perhaps?

As with most things, it is better to be proactive rather than reactive and so trying to look at the key drivers in knife crime to try and prevent it happening in the first place is every bit as important, if not more so, than dealing with the consequences and trying to find effective deterrents. Amnesty events, where such knives and weapons can be handed in anonymously, have helped reduce the number of knives in circulation in the past which is clearly an initiative that helps but It is only starting point.

It takes little effort to give easy soundbites but the answer to knife crime is likely far more complex and nuanced and politicians need to stop trying to score points off each other and start to work together and with the Police and other appropriate agencies to tackle it. In the meantime, there will be plenty of mindless t o sse rs about to act like those in NI who took the opportunity on the back of this heinous attack to set fire to people's houses and cars.

I sadly read this morning, that the scum of Northern Ireland decided to take the law into their own hands. These inhumane individuals who gather as one mob to destroy social harmony are no better than those that use knives to commit their heinous acts of crime.

They are dividing communities and to what end. They are not really concerned about the dangers of knife crime or the individuals who are the victims of knife crime. These people who cause mayhem are just waiting to go out and rampage, they needed and excuse and they got one to bring out their true personalities.

They are vile and I wish they could be incarcerated for life. We need knife crime to be banished from our streets but we also need these despicable low life, vile individuals removed from our society. Unfortunately, neither will likely be so.
