  • International Breaks

When did this start ? Maybe 10+ years ago ?
Clearly we managed ok previously, so maybe the influential Premiership leaders complained and got their way.
Back in the day therefore, if we lost a player called for international duty he was replaced, giving the reserve player a starting opportunity.
Even further back in the day, pre substitutions, I can?t remember there being major complaints, teams just got on with it.

It’s boring Prando with no club matches and last night it was watch England and the mrs would be in a foul mood or let her watch Dragon’s Den and she would be happy. Dragon’s Den was actually a decent watch.

Who wants to watch dirty Vilers anyway and I bet the k nob Gary Neville was not flying the flag in support either 😂

Your memory is perhaps better than mine as I always thought there had been international breaks.
I remember a time when England were so poor that they decided to play a load of Liverpool players as Liverpool were good.
That must have been 30 odd years back.

I watched the Scotland game, at least there was something at stake in that; it was rather dramatic at the end! I couldn’t face watching the bore-fest that is an England match, especially a ‘couldn’t care less’ friendly!

Apparently international breaks go back further than that. They were first implemented during the qualification period for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

No interest in friendlies. Absolutely dislike, football wise, the weekends without domestic football.

Nothing more I can add really other than, they were real footballers of a time gone by, did not need all this pandering. What a state the game is in these days.

I’ll add, if what I have read and have had described to me by my elders is correct, the time gone by were so much more enjoyable than what we have today.

Thanks for that Phil. A fountain of knowledge.

                  Just read this re:international breaks

From 2026 onwards, this will be condensed into one period which covers the final full week of September and early October, in which each nation can participate in a maximum of four matches.
The change means that clubs across the Premier League and other top European leagues will have around three weeks without football from September 21.
