That’s interesting. I used to work at Rover in Solihull (Rover, Rover-Triumph, BL Cars, 1968 - 1976) and there were quite a few historic Rovers kept at the factory, including what was described as the first Land Rover. It was immaculately maintained and finished in pale green. There is, it seems, some discrepancy between that film and the vehicle that was owned by the Rover Company back then. Interesting!
I’ve just looked it up. The Land Rover I remember is almost certainly HUE 166. It is in the museum at Grayson. There were 48 pre-production vehicles built and this one is the fourth one made, R04. It must, therefore, pre-date the one in the Richard Hammond film. It was used from time to time in various sales promotion events and I am sure that it was referred to as ‘Old No.1’. I must make an effort to visit that museum sometime as there is another car that I would like to see if it is housed there. An old friend used to race an ex-works Austin Healey Sprite that was built for the Sebring 12 hour race, driven by the former F1 driver Pedro Rodriguez. Someone took on the restoration but I know nothing since, as my friend died a few years back.
