If Notts had the exact same amount of goals, chances created, passages of play and levels of entertainment this season in tier 2 not tier 4, everybody would be ecstatic. If this was tier 7, organising a protest would be fully justified.
Entertainment should only be important when you've reached and consolidated at a level you shouldn't realistically be higher than.
I think fans will accept consistently good results over entertainment, but if a team is not entertaining to watch, then frustration with poor results surfaces much sooner. You want to leave the ground feeling you got your money's worth, especially with the price of football these days. The warm glow of a win probably does gloss over a scratchy performance, but too many such performances and even the most loyal supporters start having to drag themselves to games rather than looking forward to them.
That may be true for me and you, but in order to progress we need to attract new "customers". Entertainment is the easiest way to do that, and we've been able to offer it in bucketloads over the last couple of seasons. Unfortunately, we haven't it offered much lately.
Jose Mourinho was probably the manager who defied the notion that fans demand entertainment. His brand of "anti-football" got such good results at Chelsea, Inter Milan etc. that it was difficult for supporters to argue with it, but he was a remarkable exception to the normal rule.
Broadly speaking, football is an entertainment business, that's why TV companies pay millions to screen it, and if you're not providing sufficient entertainment for a long time, then sooner or later you won't get as much business.
Exactly this! Look at the absolute tripe we served up in the middle to late 2000s, out attendances were in the gutter, similar story in the mid 2010s as well. Good, entertaining football brings in the crowds, it just so happens usually it coincides with a successful team as well
I like to see us play well and win, but i am not too enthused about this possession type of football where we have over 70% of the play , which is mainly in our own half, and subsequently lose the the game. I find it boring and tedious to watch.. This type of rubbish will eventually turn people away from paying good money just to fall a sleep at games..
A bit of a conundrum this one , especially as we have been spoilt with both entertaining and successful football in recent times. I go to see Notts because i love Notts and always will, they can't take that away from you!. If Notts win then that is great, if they win in style even better. i loved the football played under Burchnall and Williams. It was a joy to watch and we won more than we lost and mainly with scintillating (IMO) football. Obviously the league had something to do with that but you can only beat what is put in front of you. How many times have we failed to beat the so called smaller teams in cup games etc. I think one season in particular though might sum up form over function for me. Lets take the Munto Season, we played some fantastic football under McParland and Hans Bakke (IMO) but were hovering amongst the play off spots if i remember correctly ? Then Cotterill came on board and we stormed the league. In my eyes though i thought his style of football was awful. so there we had it Beauty and the Beast in one season. The fact that we ended up successful meant the style and entertainment had no bearing what ever style you preferred !? However if we take the Nolan seasons, his football was awful but successful at first. Saved us from certain relegation, then had us in the play offs and then was on the way of taking us down. When we were achieving it was acceptable when we were losing week in week out and obviously awful then the poor style of play was unacceptable. So the question remains do we go to be entertained, Yes, are we bothered if we aren't then the answer is NO, so long as we win !!!
Even taking into account some of the games we have suffered down the Lane this season I suspect we are still as entertaining as most in this league, a better question is have we been spoilt for entertainment over the last few seasons? Is there another side playing at our level over the last 4/5 seasons who have enjoyed the likes of Macca, Ruben, Crowely, Didzy, Jones & maybe I should add Jatta & Namane if only for Durhams sake. At our level these are all exceptionally entertaining players who would fly into any team in div 2 let alone non league & it should come as no surprise that we are struggling to replace them, both the ones who have gone & the ones who are injured, & not as entertaining without them. Hopefully the recruitment team will find us some more gems but I think we will have to get used to losing our key players to richer/higher clubs, I do like to be entertained but I am also a realist.
