Neilson was interviewed multiple times throughout the last year where he mentioned "playing at the highest level" and "playing in the English Premiership" so it wouldn't surprise me if he is pushing for it. How many players that have left us for peanuts have gone on to forge great careers and demand large transfer fees though?
Ali Coote > Brentford - now playing in Ireland, got a little bit of money for him I think - good decision in hindsight.
Kieran Freeman > Southampton - now back at United.
Harry Souttar > Stoke - its taken a few years but now a mainstay in the Stoke team in the Championship. Maybe one that got away but we did make a little bit of money on him.
Scott Allan - might have got more had he signed that new contract, but has never lived up to the hype, simply a good Scottish Premiership player.
Scott Banks - still too early to tell, but we got a decent wedge for him so not sure where the line is? Take the 6 figure sum now or risk getting nothing. Its difficult.
So really, will Neilson be any different? If he goes, I'm sure we'll be sensible enough (right?) to stick a sell-on clause there so if he ends up moving from Leicester then we get a slice of any fee.
My own opinion is that if the interest is real and the offer is accepted then he is gone in a flash. I would have said £500k minimum for the kid, but I'm sure if it does happen then Scott Burns will give us the insight.
I like Neilson, he's raw but he's got something about him. I think it all boils down to what he wants. If he wants to stay and develop at Tannadice then Ogren/Asghar would be renegading on their master plan if they let him go. It's been said before but these premiership clubs are so filthy rich with sky money that they can take a punt on promising talent from inferior leagues by merely raiding the petty cash tin.
I suppose if he is deemed not good enough to play in that defence then we might as well let him go with a lot of bells on the deal.I am probably going too far here but we should ask Leicester for a decent player who can cross a ball on loan till the end of the season FOC of course.
I hope you are reading the board today Tony.
Yeah, Edwards & Neilson both staying put. No business expected in or out.
In all fairness, they've kept us 8th or above most of the season. And in the top for the last couple of months.
I know everyone will say "other teams had games in hand", "we are not winning games" etc and thats true... but we have a core group of experienced guys in there that, even though on the pitch they may cause us more issues than they are worth sometimes, will keep the squad focused and these are the type of people you want in there when the going gets tough (for example, would you rather have had Connolly, Reynolds and Butcher in 2016 than the players we had? Yes, I would have).
