The Met are attempting to police in a non confrontational manner is my take on it .
Clearly they've identified that people are angry and frustrated after weeks of lockdown .
Huge amounts of alcohol and drug taking will have taken place and racial tensions are in there too , an explosive c@cktail if you will .
Two ways you can go with this , go steaming in with batons and you'll end up with a full scale riot and massive disorder which could spark further riots elsewhere , we've seen this before ... or you try and contain the problem and a softer approach .
Blemished? Slavery a blemish in our history!? Ok, I'm game, give me an example then of an atrocity in the same context or what could be deemed as an atrocity you chuffin fruit cake...
Come on Cam that is so out of order. How can slavery be a blemish
Heres is a definition
blemish
/ˈblɛmɪʃ/
Learn to pronounce
noun
a small mark or flaw which spoils the appearance of something.
This is what I mean about folks getting away with right wing nonsense on here. It is a disgraceful comment...
What worse crimes are there than slavery? Then you get on to me about questioning his legal credentials? How can anyone in teh legal trade seriously think slavery is a blemish? What would he say about modern day slavery. A blemish?
The guy is conning you and you can't see it!
Fruit cake? Don't you usually get all 'moral high ground' on abuse.
Slavery was and is a stain on humanity. If you want to single out British history on it, then fair enough. Don't forget the bit where we drove it's abolition. But in wringing your hands on the subject, maybe you pause to afk yourself what you are actually achieving.
So give me an example of an atrocity then like I asked you to...
Is modern day slavery just a blemish? So lets get this right somebody comes to you claiming they have been used as a slave and you say I can fight your case but you aint much chance cos slavery is just a blemish?
Fruit cake is one of the nicer things I have been called on here by the way so count yourself lucky owd lad...as the right wingers tell me on here stop being a snowflake.
This is all very well if you just want to focus on the most simplistic blame based model you can think of. The biggest over riding factor in single parent families is poverty and lack of education, and you will find just the same kind of single parents, family break ups, **** pregnancies in poorer white working class areas in Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and most towns where white working class families are in similar conditions. The difference is the larger relative % of Black people living in poverty compared to the % of white people.
And of course, cycles of poverty persist, together with poor education, health, domestic violence and parental neglect.
This isn't to excuse personal responsibility though, just an attempt to explain much of the causes behind what we see. No one can do anything about what we don't understand. As I well know with the families of my students, poor life choices are made within these but in a broader context, they are repeating life choices from parents and what is seen in their local communities. The same will be seen in poverty hit towns, cities and countries throughout the world, black, white and anything in between.
For the record, for me, it isn't about recompensing for the empire. With regards to the empire, and moving forward, it is just about acknowledging the events of history and how that has shaped Black culture and particularly the complicated impact on Black psyche which has passed down through the generations just has it has in Ireland. It isn't anyone's fault who is alive now and I don't think anyone is suggesting it is. It's just taking something dreadfully negative in our society, understanding what is really going on and then educating ourselves and all young people of all races to do better. The finger pointing approach, and simplistic attempts to blame any single group, be it black people, white people, police, employers doesn't cut it. We're all in this together whether we like it or not, the past is past. We've just got to help the kids do better than this.
There is much within your post that I can agree with, raging, but you talk about personal responsibility, but then offer a blanket get out clause with your 'complicated effect on the black psyche' comment. What's your evidence for this 'complicated effect'? And isn't it just a wee bit patronising (surely not!)of you?

Perhaps you could sell one of your cars and donate the proceeds to assuage your feelings of guilt for being white?
