In the absence of this and depth of squad quality then he had to make adjustments. Make us hard to beat, play with the head, shore us up, defend as a team, graft, think goal difference against the top teams, counterattack, pick our moments to attack, conserve energy for a long season - which is now paying dividends BTW.
He also had to develop the young players, raw, inexperienced as well as playing to the strengths of the veteran players who already were at the limits of their abilties. This takes time to happen. Its now happening and going gung ho from the start like you suggest would have been a disaster and we'd have been dicked every week. The new striker last summer would have had us near 7th.
Its that simple really.
