The only glimmer of hope is that religion is slowly being seen as the sham it is, even evident in my lifetime. When I was a kid, it was rammed down our throats at school, and the church was beyond question. Now more and more people are seeing the light. Even in a country like Ireland, the recent abortion vote has shown that people are prepared to turn their back on ancient doctrines from the church and move into the modern world. There are however two problems - the church (or mosque, synagogue, temple etc) have a lot of wealth and a lot of power. They won't give up either easily. The second problem (yes, I am saying it) is Islam. This religion is ingrained so deeply from birth and has so many interpretations (a few of the more extreme ones dating back to the dark ages) that it will be hard to eradicate. All is not lost though - the future is bright, the future is Atheism.
