The MP has issued a series of questions to the Government as she continues battle with Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley

Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah continues to pile pressure on Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley as she called for an inquiry into the way staff are treated at his Sports Direct retail chain.

Mr Ashley vowed to improve conditions after a damning report in 2016 found he was responsible for “appalling working practices” in Sports Direct shops and warehouses.

Ms Onwurah, Labour MP for Newcastle Central, has now asked the Department for Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to investigate whether he has kept his word.

She made the request in a Parliamentary question, which was one of a number tabled by the MP in an attempt to shed light on Mr Ashley’s business practices.

Ms Onwurah asked Business Secretary Greg Clark to consider giving local communities a legal right to buy football clubs if they come up for sale.

The right already exists for libraries, community centres, pubs, shops or green spaces, which can be named “assets of community value”.

It means that if an owner puts the asset up for sale, community groups have six months to find the money to buy it themselves.

Ms Onwurah has also asked Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright if he has made an assessment of the financial transparency of football clubs.

This comes after the MP urged the Government to “initiate an investigation into the financial relationship between Mr Ashley, Sports Direct, NUFC and Newcastle United Foundation".

Ms Onwurah said she wanted to know, for example, whether the official club store, a branch of Sports Direct, paid rent to the club.

It’s the latest development in an on-going battle between Ms Onwurah, a Magpies fan, and the club's owner.

She says she is voicing concerns shared by the clubs supporters.

The MP has also said she plans to call for a parliamentary debate on the financial running of Newcastle United by Ashley, while also discussing football ownership in England more broadly.

The pair entered into a bitter war of words after she penned a parliamentary petition demanding Mr Ashley pump more cash into the club.

He responded with a letter to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport claiming the petition presented a “wholly inaccurate assessment of the situation at Newcastle United”.

Mr Ashley said he was being portrayed as a “pantomime villain” by the “media circus” and MPs.

And he insisted he has invested in the club. He said he had provided interest-free loans and was currently owed £144m, and had cleared third-party debts which once came to £76m.
