Last season we had a league one attack and a national league defence. We scored a huge number of goals but also conceded a huge number of goals. Those were the basic facts and stats. We were also in a post Luke Williams slump and hangover in the second half of the season. A baptism of fire also for Stuart Maynard making the step up from part time to full time and the club seemingly being in an after the Lord Mayors show mood.
The club have been bold in that they have looked to address these by releasing a number of players who were out of contract but also under contract and part of the Luke Williams era. This was particularly in defence which has enabled Stuart Maynard to have his own team and give him the best opportunity to make the step up and be higher.
The other big thing is that we have held onto the family silver in our best key players notably Jodi Jones and Dan Cowley. Obviously Macca has gone to Milwall and if the money for Macca has meant we have not needed to sell Crowley or Jones this summer and that they could see out their contracts like Wootton and Rodrigues previously then with Jatta being brought for £150k earlier in the year I’m happy with this business.
In my opinion the club now have a year to prepare for what I believe to be the ultimate departure of Jones and Crowley regardless if we get promoted or not as I foresee them following the path of Rodrigues moving up two levels. January will be an opportunity to bring in potential replacements like Jatta for Macca last January, unless they are already in the building but under the radar and will shine over the season.
I like that the club have brought in some young players as well with potential both our own players and loans so thinking ahead.
The squad seems to be more balanced this season on the face of it and time will tell. I do think overall it is a stronger squad and am confident in time this will be proven by finishing higher than last seasons 14th place. ItÂ’s a tiny sample but our results so far have been better than the equivalent games last season and we have had two draws against a former league one and current league one team.
The cherry on the cake would be a win at Swindon today to exercise the ghost of relegation that hangs over the county ground and the magic roundabout down there.
Does it all start again in January 25 ?
Will we hang on to Jones and Crowley ?
Will the woman slapping, alcohol loving, "everybody deserves a second chance" still be with us ?
Can't wait for next January episode to begin...

I’d be amazed if Hinchy and Abbott both started alongside each other too often. From what I’ve seen, I like Hinchy. Looks good on the ball, nice passing range and hasn’t been scared to get stuck in. I also think coming into a game after 25 minutes and picking up the pace quickly is a great sign early doors.
I understand the frustration of not splashing the cash. Lots of fans want that money turned around ASAP. But I can also understand why you may hold off, especially at our level. Spending big sums at our level is much riskier than higher up the pyramid because money can be hard to come by and the impact of that player doesn’t perform and in turn the team can be a big burden.
Your final line sums it up… “feel more like Tipton” why are you making this assumption? What’s led you there?
If you’ve watched tons of Abbott and Hinchy in the PL2 and have loads of reference points for them, then I apologise. But I struggle to reconcile when on one hand, it’s time to wait and see how we get on, but you’ve essentially written off two players part of the squad.

I watch quite a bit of PL2 and academy football. There is a reason why the under 23 sides in the tin pot trophy never progress to the final stages, because when teams put out their full strength sides, they're just too good for them. The Charlie McCann thing is interesting too. If we’ve made bids for him and they’ve been knocked back and we’ve walked away, do you see that as a lack of ambition or sensible financial management? I appreciate its hard to know fully without knowing what bids we made. Similar to Crowley, are you happy that we’ve stuck to our guns and kept one of our best players? The two scenarios seem similar, again, without knowing the fine details. It’d be interesting to get your perspective on that.
As an aside to that, all the players we have brought in were wanted by the board, obviously. So why is McCann so different to others you’ve panned?
