Well the tv programme is about the cancellation of Benny Hill but I haven't seen one called the "Cancellation of Micky Flanagan" for example.Quote:

Some right pompous superior horse **** on this thread about something as subjective as comedy. Saw Nish Kumar in his stand up 3 years ago and he was excellent away from the purely political straight jacket of the Daily Mash. Not a big fan of Rosie Jones but she's selling out some decent sized theatres so fair play to her. What's the point of saying X isn't funny when they are earning a better living than we are in a notoriously difficult profession?
Seen some great comedians in recent years, Tim Minchin, Josh Widdecombe, Geoff Norcott, Mark Thomas, Sara Pascoe and looking forward to seeing Rhod Gilbert soon. Also off to see The comedy store soon, which continues to sell out most nights, Mischief theatre have a new west end show and selling out their improv 'movie nights'. In short, comedy is alive and well with our without boring old farts yearning for the past.

So, the bottom line is that you can?t provide an example of ?people who claim to be offended by Benny Hill's type of comedy [but who] are apparently OK with the fact that a lot of current "comedians" are unable to put a joke together without including the "F" word??Quote:

The programme is called the cancellation of Benny Hill, but have you actually watched it? He gets a fairly gentle hard time from three younger viewers who are amazed at the level of racial stereotyping and the objectification of women in some of his work, but the professional pundits go to some lengths to point out what they see as the quality of some of his comedy and technique. They also point out that the audience bore at least as much responsibility for that element which would (rightly in my view) not be acceptable in this day and age.
I saw no evidence of any cancellation other than in the strict sense of that word. ITV dropped him because of the cost of his shows and falling audiences.
Frankie Boyle, Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr to name but three all include material in their live shows that is so offensive that it couldn't be aired on TV, but I assume they work on the basis that anyone paying for a ticket knows and accepts what they are going to get.Quote:

Of the current batch of comedians, I found Dara O'Briain surprisingly good when I was persuaded to go to see him a couple of years ago. I would also recommend Pierre Novellie, who I saw at the Fringe last year.

When I saw Chubby Brown in Rotherham almost 40 years ago I was surprised to see that the audience consisted of at least 50% women.
Mellow, I have to concur with the 28 year old bloke, I think Micky Flannigan provides great viewing. His shows portray a totally different angle from that of your average stand up comedian. He tells a story of life and how he grew up, not just one liners.Quote:

One main thing I like about the man, is that he says when he's run out fresh material that's him done. He doesn't believe in 'doing the circuit' feeding his paying customers repeat drivel like some other famous comics and we know who they are.
He uses expletives but in a subtle way not as direct nasty swear words and I for one don't find this offensive, as it's all part of his storytelling act.
