Yes Macca scored 28 goals and we have lost those but what may provide some assurance is if we remember the amount of goals he scored was offset or even nullified to some extent by the ridiculous amount we conceded at the other end due to individual errors. Had we had a stronger defence we would have finished significantly higher in the table and could have ended up in the playoffs. The other side of the coin is without those 28 goals we could have been in trouble in the bottom third of the table.
This season should be different with more balance between attack and defence quality. I believe Jatta can get 20 goals and as such our defence just needs to concede 8 less goals plus the five Jatta scored last season so making it 13 less goals to be in a similar place to where we were with Macca. This for me is achievable. If anything we need to get the goals conceded down dramatically to stand any chance of challenging. It’s got to be around 46-50 goals at the most. If it’s not then we have to score more to compensate like last season and it makes it harder to finish higher.
Any successful side needs to be solid at the back and the 1-0 wins titles. With Jatta, McGoldrick, Jones and Crowley we have the makings of a potent attacking force at this level. Not forgetting Scott and Brown and other new midfielders who can contribute. I’m optimistic we will be fine and can do well this season.
The top three last season all shipped just over a goal a game:
Stockport: 1.04
Wrexham: 1.13
Mansfield: 1.02
There was quite a big jump to the four playoff teams:
Franchise: 1.48
Doncaster: 1.48
Crewe: 1.41
Crawley: 1.46
We are going to ship goals the way we play. However you'd hope with improved back line quality, not as many as last season. But the way we play, I just don't see us being clean sheet merchants. Not in League 2. But around a goal a game seems manageable. (Our current average after 3.)
For what it's worth Stockport had 17 clean sheets, Wrexham had 16 (as did Wimbledon with Bass in goal) and Mansfield 14. Crewe 14, Doncaster 13, Crawley 10 and Franchise only 9 - Notts had 8.
Not to even mention the future payments we could receive as part of his development. Similar to the small but significant percentage we would receive if Jack Grealish moved to a foreign club for a huge fee today, as we were part of his development long ago. Speculative maybe but not a bad long-term approach IMHO.
Where is the contradictions? We've signed a player we don't need? I pointed out earlier in the window we had bids rejected for McCann but instead of pushing the boat out a bit (from what I understand, we weren't too far away) we went elsewhere and got total inexperience in Hinchy then they feel we need cover for Robertson for some reason and again gone for inexperience. Had we got McCann, we'd be fine with McCann Edwards whilst Palmer got up to speed. Tell me where the contradictions are?
I'm basically saying by going for the cheap option, we've actually missed out on strengthening the squad and adding value which McCann would have added. Instead we're probably in another Ed Francis scenario
You’ve just about written off Abbott and Hinchy. One’s been here since the summer and one’s been here a day. Pretty clear you’re not having Brown either. But then, now the window has closed, it’s time to ‘wait and see how it goes.’ So we can do that with the team, but not individuals within the team? Okay.
You’ve also been on a big crusade about teams we’ve played ‘not being L1 standard’ despite being in L1 or ‘they won’t be in the top half of L2’ despite it being 3 games into the season. But now it’s time wait and see how we get on. Good.
‘The board wanted Charlie McCann.’ Well the board wanted the other 13 we’ve brought in too. But Charlie McCann would’ve been great because you like him. I don’t profess to know anything about him, but based on some of your recent reasoning, he played in a side last season that got relegated. Nobody else has paid what FGR wanted. What could that tell you about him? Maybe a lot, maybe not a lot. But you’re convinced he’d have been great and convinced Abbott can’t cut it. But let’s give it time, but not with X, Y and Z. Okay.
Balti's head has gone. It's a meltdown of epic proportions, I hope he is okay.
I thought Mapperley was going to explode last week too...is there something in the water in Nottingham? Have Severn Trent done a dirty?
What's the significant difference between Hinchy and McCann that it would have been worth 'pushing the boat out a bit for'?
There's a year's age difference, neither have 'won' anything and McCann has had a year's experience in a relegated team. What evidence have you that the year of FGR experience which might (not would) have added value have been worth pushing the boat out for? Has McCann been picked up by another club?
