It is probably hard for younger Arabs to understand the full impact Jim McLean had on some of us, not just in terms of achievements -which are there in black in white, but when I started following Utd mid eighties, Jim McLean was all I knew, he'd be there for another decade as manager and further in the background. I always hung on his every word - programme notes, interviews, autobiography etc... watching how he would set teams up for Europe, listening to his tactical thinking was fascinating, his introduction of new ideas etc... and consider myself lucky to as a fan have almost got that as my football education, and a rounded education. Likewise our European sorties made me aware of football outside Scotland and I became fascinated with the likes of the great AC Milan side in the late 80s, and World Cups etc... at a time when there was little television exposure to football outwith your own country.
Think the standards he set is what we should always aspire to. I know that has to be set in prism of realism, but moment you start accepting poor standards your level dips.
RIP Jim McLean. A great for you guys and I have often thought what might have been if only.... I met him a few times through the boolin' as opposed to the fitba' and when playing bools he was very much in the same manner as he was at the fitba, wanting to win but he was good company. I also met him at a Boolin' Dinner where he hosted a table. He was teetotal but an excellent host and had many stories to tell with good humour, far removed from the persona that he was accused of and at times lived up to in the football arena.
Again RIP.
Been looking at Wee Jim's record while following United.

Between the seasons 77-76 and 92-93 United never finished lower than 5th.
Add to that the many glorious European nights, we were spoiled beyond belief.
