It was a pleasure watching United in Europe. In those days everyone cheered for each other in Europe and United were for several years the most exciting team in Britain to watch. Especially in 87 when the whole island was watching! McLean was a master. Fiercely loyal, and demanded the same from his plauers. Even as the mighty Rangers moved to get him, he shocked scottish football, showing loyalty to his club. He was very persuasive and often got his way. I often wonder if we had got our first choice, if we could have conquered Europe. Credit to him for making his club known nationwide under the label of “new firm”. It shows what an achievement this is when it still is the case many years after he left United aswell as retaining the position as one of the top 5 or 6 best supported clubs in the country.

May he rest in peace but his memories will march on. Some of us older supporters really should keep his memory alive.

We are mate, we've obviously updated it but every week we're all screaming
    'get Butcher aff'

I agree with Steve, going from expecting to get a result against Man Utd and Barcelona to fearing the worst against Alloa and QOS was hard for the elder Arabs especially and the hierarchy who cheaply sold anything that glittered will never be forgiven.

Although at times a brutal and tough regime for players, Wee Jum created treasure and pleasure that will always remain
    He wiill never be forgotten

Pretty sad given how much respect their greatest ever manager had for him.

To be fair some of them are respectful and complimentary. The bitter ones are like that because, and they can deny it all they want but it’s true, Oor Jum was the only one that had Fergie’s number at that time and didn’t just beat them ‘occasionally’ but very regularly. Knowing what a great manager Sir Alex was, that says even more of just how good Jum was - and he did it with even less resources than Fergie ever had. The bitter ones should take a step back and realise that Sir Alex will likely be as upset as anyone this morning - him and Jim were great friends and he more than anyone recognises just what an incredible manager Jim was.

My sons were 11 and 12 in 1983 when we took them to Dens and saw us win the league. The memories of the great years under Jim is something we will remember for ever. I remember there was an incident I think with reporters at the airport and he was going to resign. I wrote him a letter begging him not to and was surprised when I got a phone call from him late one night saying he and Doris were touched by the letter and it would be in the paper next morning that he was staying. Great memories. RIP
