Thread: Blackouts coming this winter in Uk.

Blackouts coming this winter in Uk.

Looking like sanctioning Russia was not such a good idea after all:-

A government contingency plan could force citizens to ration electricity to avoid blackouts.
The UK government has drawn up emergency energy plans under which citizens could be asked to switch off their lights and turn down their thermostats to avoid blackouts this winter, the Telegraph has revealed.

The plans would be enacted in case of a gas or electricity supply shortage, and the public would be asked to slash their energy consumption, the newspaper reported on Saturday. According to documents seen by the Telegraph, in such a scenario the British government would deliver messages at regular intervals via radio, television, social media as well as posters and leaflets, telling people to cut their electricity and gas usage.

The UK National Grid has reportedly held meetings in recent days with representatives of energy-intensive industries, seeking their assistance to avoid a worst-case scenario of rolling blackouts or a complete shutdown, even offering to pay those companies to use less power.

However, according to Arjan Geveke, Director of the Energy Intensive Users Group, the National Grid would start paying industry to shut down only after calls on the public to reduce demand.

“First of all they will want to do a public information campaign because that’s the least costly option,” he was quoted as saying by The Telegraph. “There’s obviously an increased risk of security of supply in the winter.”

Meanwhile, the UK energy and cost of living crisis continues to intensify, with annual household bills expected to surpass £3,300 ($3,971) this winter, according to energy consultant Cornwall Insight.

The National Grid has asked electricity suppliers to establish ways to pay households to shift their energy usage to times of peak supply, such as during strong winds, and reduce use at other times. However, companies including British Gas and Shell told the outlet they would not be sticking to that plan this year.

As energy prices soar amid anti-Russia sanctions over the Ukraine conflict, the EU is also developing plans to combat its energy crisis. Last week, the European Commission suggested that all EU member states cut their natural gas consumption by 15% from September until March next year. The Commission cited concerns that stored gas will be insufficient for the coming winter, if Russia decides to cut supplies to the continent entirely.

With EU energy ministers set to vote on the emergency measures later this week, several countries are opposed to the idea. Germany, Austria and France have already asked their citizens to cut their energy use by taking shorter showers, switching off lights and turning down their thermostats.

It's been coming for years, predicted for years, sit on your coal seams and shut down coal fired power stations, ban fracking, sit on all that gas waiting to tapped underground and depend on countries like Russia to supply us, when was the last nuclear power plant built in this country ?

All predictable and predicted but the eco-loons in the government and the media have won, hands down, renewables it is, so here we are, panicking about a couple of days hot weather last week, while the serious question being ignored is, how many will die from the cold next winter. Best not go there eh.

The answer was and still is nuclear powered energy sinkov, but your eco-loons like your very own Lib-Dem turned Tory want to harness the wind.

Putin has all of Europe over a barrel, Trump gave fair warning but the likes of Merkel and Macron would not listen.

This is not party political BT, they're all in thrall to the eco-loons, virtually every politician, virtually every political party, virtually every journalist. One or two starting to wake up and panic a bit now, but it's miles too late, years too late to do much about it.

As sinkov says, this has been on the cards for many years and through many different governments.
I have a friend who worked in the energy field, particularly relating to the National Grid and, in 1999, he told me that, unless more power stations were built and the Grid improved substantially, we would be in s**t street early in the 21st Century.
Nothing has been done to improve things so................................................

13 years of a Tory government and still no plan how to solve our long term energy requirements sounds very much political to me mon ami.

Are the Tories going to continue to run scared of Greta Thunberg or get off their arses and get this sorted?

After listening to Rishi and Liz last night I don't think they could agree on a meal from a menu - do you?

There is too much «*short termism*» and too little «*long term vision*».

Everyone has jumped on the green, eco bandwagon but no one addresses how the targets will be achieved.

The alternatives are there but they are too often rejected as too expensive. As an island England is surrounded by limitless energy in terms of wave power. It was being suggested in the 1970’s but dismissed as too expensive and unnecessary. It is even more expensive now and even more necessary to harness the power around the island.

England is facing a drought whilst it is surrounded by water. Desalination technology has been available for years and yet it has been dismissed as too expensive and not necessary.

Companies is this sector have for years paid some of the highest dividends to shareholders whilst the infrastructure falls apart.

If you want to say it's political BT, then I will say that we're lucky we've had the Tories in power this last 13 years, the lights will be going out soon, but if we'd had a Labour, or even more catastrophically a LibDem government, the lights would be out already.

Back to your old fall-back/default position eh mon ami? The Tories are $hit but any other lot would be even $hittier.

It's time we gave some other lot a go because if this lot make it any worse God only knows where it will all end.
