Hitting a barn door with a banjo

Is there really anybody, apart from Swale of course, that thinks Maynard is the man to lead Notts to promotion?

Even Swale's not convinced following tonight's debacle.

This season? Looking rather unlikely. Next? Maybe.

We will finish in a considerably better position this season than last season, so that by definition is progress and something upon which to build, but I don't think it's asking too much to expect the football on offer to be watchable as well. There have been a few genuinely decent 'moments' of entertainment such as the second half against MK Dons, but I have to say, Maynardball overall looks like a close relative of Ardleyball, and I don't fancy watching more of that dross served up on a consistent basis for another season, whatever league we're in.

Fair comment. I doubt he sets out to produce boring football.

Does he really have the attacking and creative players available to make it exciting again? Or is that strategic side of it still a work in progress?

I agree. Maynardball is a like a modern, fancier version of Ardleyball. In both cases, it's sometimes hard to see where a goal or a win is going to come from, especially at home. Unless everything clicks, there's just a general sense of being out of ideas, trying the same patterns again and again with no cutting edge.

The comments about playing with no emotion were worrying too. I get what he's saying - we need to be calm and focused on each game - but football is all about emotion. I want my team to play with emotion and be angry when we lose and elated when we win. I want us to win battles through sheer determination and will. The current team doesn't look capable of this.

At this point, I'd have Williams back. No way we're going up this season, and despite being in the top six or so virtually all season, it's never felt to me like a promotion campaign. It's like everyone already knows how it ends.

We need something to ignite the fans and players again. Williams could do that.

Ardley did at least have some excuse in the quality of players. Maynard in theory should have better ones.

Important point. Take emotion out of football and I don't see the point of passing through that turnstile

Even for the specific situation he was talking about I disagree. Behind in the last 10mins? 9 times out of 10 you won't score by just continuing to play to the coaches orders and patterns. You have to play with desperation and take more risks or you'll lose with it appearing like you don't even care. And what do the opposition want? Yes, just continue with what they've been containing for the first 80mins

But we are also playing against better players and teams.

As bad as Ardleys style was at times, we forget the amount of timed players hit one from 20 or 25 yards. Slow slow for sure but we weren't afraid to hit it when needed either, and Wootton knew how to make it stick when it got to him. The last few weeks we have looked like a team short of ideas and unwilling to shake it up.
