    The sale of Wembley stadium

What do people think about this?

In my opinion the firstly it's stupid to sell a building in London that cost 800 million 10 years ago for 600 million. The land and building must be worth in excess of 1 billion by now, well done FA. Secondly is the claim it's to help grassroots football, you mean the same grass roots football they've been promising to invest in for decades?

Martin Glenn is an idiot to use the example of Germany having double the 3G pitches we have, yeah they do and ours is the richest FA in the world so what exactly is the excuse for it? Also we're a smaller country and still can't adequately provide the correct number of pitches.

Thirdly the stadium is around 170 million in debt but it's paid off in 6 years and then for the next 40 years would have made us a lot of money which now is going to go to Jacksonville American Football team and Khans pockets??!!

They try and sugarcoat it but all it's doing is lining the pockets of the FA board members which I'm sure each one will get a nice bonus to ensure the transaction runs smoothly. How can we sell our national stadium for less than we built it to an Amercian Football franchise??

If the reason was given that we want to England team to play all over England again then fair enough but don't sell a massive stadium and plot of land in London for 200-300 million less than it cost you 10 years ago?? Who would do this?? We all know the FA are incompetent but something about isn't right about this, they're rushing through a fast sale to line their pockets.

Seeing as quite a chunk of taxpayers money was used as well then I'd expect us to see some benefit or be consulted. What? We won't be? Now there's a surprise but as long as the rich can line their pockets even more then who cares about the taxpayer eh? Sick of getting done over everyday by tw@ts in their mansions, the whole system in this country stinks to high heaven.

I was under the understanding that the FA Council was dead against it. The board may want it but the people that decide it are aggressively against it. Hopefully it'll fall through and the board resigns allowing for a clear deck and fresh ideas coming in

It will be a total disgrace for us English not to own our own National Stadium.

I think every FA board member who's voted for this should be lined up against a wall and shot at by the England squad. Stirling included.

£160 million of that was lottery money. OUR MONEY.

Money that was going to be used for good causes. They should return every penny plus interest

Disagree. Why should they escape without so much as a mark?

For me, Wembley Stadium ceased to have any real significance in (English) football terms when the old one was knocked down.

The old stadium had undoubtedly served its time and was looking very tired and outdated, but at least it was a historic structure. The new national stadium should have been located in central England, to better serve football fans across the country. It was only (as ever!) the self-interest and hubris of the London-centric football authorities and other hangers on that prevented what should have been an obvious move.

If you're being honest about it, what we have now is a big new plastic seat stadium that looks pretty much like any other big new stadium, but in a ridiculously poor location. In place of history and possibly a football museum with tourist value, we got a very expensively assembled non-entity with a so-called "famous arch". Big deal!

Frankly I don't care who owns the stadium and I have no particular desire to go back there, but it is where it is now. I suppose I would feel slightly more well-disposed towards the stadium if it served the purpose of hosting an English/British NFL franchise, but that's about the only enthusiasm I can muster for it.

I understand the real reason is so that Coventry can have it as their home stadium from 2021, ready for their Champions League campaigns etc. (I understand from UEFA that it's been decided they will lose 3-1 in the final to PSG). The money will be used to build a new National Stadium on Meadow Lane for Notts to use in theirs from the following season when we beat Marseilles 3-2 in extra time (according to the ref.). It's only right to let Real Coventry have their day in the sun first.

    Very sporting!

I remember reading in a book by Simon Inglis (brilliant writer on football grounds) that Port Vale's Vale Park was originally planned to be an 80,000 capacity 'Wembley of the North', but unsurprisingly the club couldn't fund or live up to those lofty ambitions. The proof of the original intention is there in the size of the entrance tunnel onto the pitch I believe.

I remember my first visit to Vale Park after hearing that, and being able to sense the broken ambition of the place. By the way, we lose to Sporting in the 2024 semi finals apparently
