    Burton Albion Post Match Thoughts

A bit of a seesaw game from losing to winning to drawing to eventually winning. Three points clear atop the league and essentially a balance of wins and losses for our promotion rivals. Posh are looking a threat in 3rd after hammering Ipswich but amazing as it seems if all the teams won their games in hand over them (and if it was feasible) we would be 7 points clear of them and they would be in 10th place. Good substitutions by PW today and as someone suggested he must finally be taking advice offered to him on the MM match thread

    Thoughts?

Glad to get that one over and done with, really well organised side, they had more possession and more shots.

3 points is the main thing

Hard earned win today against a good, well organised side. I thought we were a bit lacking defensively today Woody was caught out several times and Ikky was also put under more pressure than he's used to. I'd put this down to Burton their midfield played high and we know that is a weakness of ours not being able to defend in front of the defence. A lovely bit of footy for our first goal, we should have played more of that instead of too much long ball. Glad to see our centre forwards scoring, right decision to bring Freddie on for Vass but I'd have brought Lindsay on not Wiles to strengthen the midfield, I can see us losing him and it would be a shame.
Where do we get these refs from, bloke kicks Wood of the
all and just gets a yellow, keeper handles a goal bound back pass and we get a corner, the ref was a clown.
Iversen. Came out more decisively today
Thompson. The lads class but was pressed a bit today
    Ihiekwe. As above.
Wood. A bit stretched today not at his best.
Mattock. Fast asleep for their second but overall a typical Mattock display.
Crooks. Massive presence in more ways than one in the midfield but got caught in possession a few times.
Barlaser. Lovely pass in lead up to first goal but not upto his recent displays.
Ogbene. Love him, good game missed out on a foul due to crap ref and a histrionic dive.
Adelekun. But off the pace today, not as good as he was Tuesday.
Smith. 2 goals lots of work, what's more to say.
Vassell. Should have done better with early chance and again not his best day.
Wiles. Ran about with the ball like a headless chicken not knowing where to pass it.
Ladapo. That's what we bought him for.
Champions win when not at their best.

A great win because we played a team that were organised, quick to close us down and could count themselves unlucky to leave NYS with nothing to show for it. However, when we look back at the results this season whatever the final outcome, we will see 3-2 and 3 points. I think Woody was MOM and all the players did their best in difficult circumstances. And, for those who tell TS to get his wallet out, just remember what record signings at a moderate cost can get you. Freddy was excellent in his cameo appearance and worried them whenever he got the ball. Oh, and yes and he scored the winner.

Mellow if you have not seen it on tv .. watch it .. there keeper only takes the ball over the line because he is annoyed with his defender or himself in my opinion... it was a clear free kick .. and I'd like to put money on ..that it would have gone in the net.... and therefore prevented a clear goal... had the keeper taken the ball over the line into the net then we would have wanted the goal because that should have been the correct outcome ..therefore it's our advantage... the ref and linesman got it wrong.hugh mistake.

Good summary Jake, pretty much how I saw it.

    Couple of points.

When Wiles came on he helped us keep possession. And what a great layoff for Freddie's goal, perfect.

I actually thought Thompson had a decent game, although he did go missing for their first goal, no idea where, as there's only one camera with iFollow.

Yes, Barlaser not quite there today, but he is a class act at this level. Crooks the best midfielder on the pitch today despite his difficult week.

Really good to get 3 points when we wern't at our best. If they had scored that sitter at 2-2 it could have been different though. Thought their forward that missed the sitter (Akins?) looked quite handy for L1.

Oh, and that was definitely a free kick for the caught backpass. Not sure wether the lino was up with play though, sure the ref didn't see it from where he was.

What a relief. Burton Albion were the better team in the first half and at half time I would've settled for a draw. It was edge of your seat stuff throughout the game and I was just willing the clock to tick faster. It was a very good game to watch, especially the second half, and Burton are unlucky to be going home empty handed. Some other results have gone our way and we're now three points clear at the top, and it looks great. There are a couple of teams who we need to drop points in the next few weeks, especially Coventry City who are the only team who can overtake us at the top with their two games in hand. Portsmouth can draw level with us if they win their two games in hand. It's still in our own hands though because we've still got to play these two. The BIG one will be Coventry away.

Wasn't expecting a fairly high-scoring game with Young Cloughie's mob in town. Looks like we took a while to get into gear, but upped the pace when Wiles and Freddie came on. Pleased that Warney is reading Millersmad... and Happy Birthday to Freddie! Quality of the subs made a difference.
