    Burton Albion Post Match Thoughts

A bit of a seesaw game from losing to winning to drawing to eventually winning. Three points clear atop the league and essentially a balance of wins and losses for our promotion rivals. Posh are looking a threat in 3rd after hammering Ipswich but amazing as it seems if all the teams won their games in hand over them (and if it was feasible) we would be 7 points clear of them and they would be in 10th place. Good substitutions by PW today and as someone suggested he must finally be taking advice offered to him on the MM match thread

    Thoughts?

Glad to get that one over and done with, really well organised side, they had more possession and more shots.

3 points is the main thing

What a relief. Burton Albion were the better team in the first half and at half time I would've settled for a draw. It was edge of your seat stuff throughout the game and I was just willing the clock to tick faster. It was a very good game to watch, especially the second half, and Burton are unlucky to be going home empty handed. Some other results have gone our way and we're now three points clear at the top, and it looks great. There are a couple of teams who we need to drop points in the next few weeks, especially Coventry City who are the only team who can overtake us at the top with their two games in hand. Portsmouth can draw level with us if they win their two games in hand. It's still in our own hands though because we've still got to play these two. The BIG one will be Coventry away.

Wasn't expecting a fairly high-scoring game with Young Cloughie's mob in town. Looks like we took a while to get into gear, but upped the pace when Wiles and Freddie came on. Pleased that Warney is reading Millersmad... and Happy Birthday to Freddie! Quality of the subs made a difference.

Just realised that with only 44 games we are about 2/3 of the way through the season. The way things are panning out with teams all beating each other, 80 points might be enough to win this league. Just 9 or 10 more wins then from 15 games

i hope Warnie apologised to Cloughie after the game for robbing 3 points off Burton.

They were much the better team and played decent football, quick incisive passing , well organised and had a game plan.

They ripped us apart again and again down the left flank, Mattock had a torrid time.

I think we were tired and the midweek game took a lot out of us.

Still a Championship bound team will win when they are not playing well, but make no mistake we got out of jail today.

I know we won but my god did anyone see that clear as day pass back?

Also I thought defence was a bit sloppy today

Wood - usually the iron fortress couldn’t keep going towards the end I saw him run from opposition box to midfield only problem is by time he got to midfield they already had a shot. Blocked by icky I may add.

Mattock looked like he wasn’t 100% couldn’t cope and left gaps often

Thompson left his position once and ended up giving them that first goal in my opinions.

Icky my god he basically covered everything absolutely flawless.

Midfield was a bunch of hungry tigers relentless and merciless to anyone who dares. crooks in particular was relentless with that ball

    Iversen 7
    Thompson 6
    Ihiekwe 9
    Wood 6
    Mattock 5
    Ogbene 7
    Crooks 9
    Barlaser 7
    Olosunde 6
    Adelakun 6
    Wiles 7
    Smith 8
    Vassell 7
    Ladapo 8

    Ref 0

Maybe I’m a bit too harsh or maybe it’s just too many games for a old lad like wood and a recently recovered mattock.

Yep would have settled for a point at half time hoping we might win but they looked dangerous every time they went forward but then again so did we.

Make no mistake this was a very good 3 points against a side who are gonna take points off top teams this season .It could easily have been none for us today. They were quick strong and organised and thank god they missed that sitter in the second half.

Thought we defended well after the 3rd goal and showed some determination we weren't gonna let them back in the game again.

Ref not much cop again but I've seen worse and credit to him for coming up and getting the ball in front of the north stand at half time with the stick he was gonna get. A brave man.

    MOMs Smithy and woody.

As you say it’s great to get three points when we were not at our best.
The difference is that we were clinical.
This is a game we wouldn’t have won last year.
I like Burton and Nigel Clough. They had a right go and are always a dangerous team at this level.
    Things looking pretty good.

Now to focus on getting revenge at Lincoln....
