    Sports Memorabilia

I had to chuckle recently when a collector here in the US paid $518,000 for the ball from the last touchdown that Tom Brady threw in the NFL only to see that less than 24h after the auction Brady 'unretired' and the ball became almost worthless. Thankfully I believe the buyer will be getting his money back.

Anyone on here a collector/buyer of sports memorabilia? Like many I have collected things incidentally along the way (especially programmes) but I've never actually bought anything with a view to starting a collection or making any money on it.

Here's what I have that has sentimental but probably no actual value (I definitely didn't pay $518,000 for them ) :-

Complete 1968 Soccer Stars Sticker Album
Johnny Quinn's autograph and one other in my autograph book from that time that I can't decipher. I think they came to a Monkwood Junior School Summer fate.
1985 Ryder Cup Programme (from the famous win at The Belfry after 27 years without a win)
H&A programmes from the 'tenpast Chelsea' season. I've promised these to rilyev but not delivered them yet.
Golf ball from my Dad's hole in one (the first one ever recorded at Roundwood G.C.)

I was never really a collector of football memorabilia.

My only real venture was in primary school in about 1960 when we were all collecting Bell Boy bubble gum “Soccer Clubs” wax wrappers. There were about 132 altogether in the set covering all the clubs in the four English and two Scottish leagues and I had them all - neatly smoothed out and kept in an empty ‘Olivier’ cigarette packet. (My mum smoked them.)

When I was about 13 I swapped them for a 1955 Topical Times Football Annual. I’ve no idea why.

The annual is worth about a fiver. The wrappers sell for silly money - anywhere up to £25 each. The full set is worth at least £750.

I've collected lots of stuff over the years but nothing of great value.

Rotherham United shirts .... roughly 12 ish
Assorted football mugs .... roughly 60 ish
Assorted football scarves .... roughly 40 ish
Assorted football pens .... roughly 70 ish
Rotherham United scrap books. One for each season with reports, tables, photos and pictures and some with signatures. All meticulously put together over a number of seasons ranging from '76 through to the mid 90's. roughly about 15.
A statue of a footballer which I got on an away trip down to Brentford. It had got West Ham United colours on but I carefully changed them to our red and white with my acrylic paints, ha-ha and it's been my pride and joy for thirty eight years now. I know this because playing on the "juke box" in the pub that I went in was Careless Whisper and it was the first time that I'd ever heard it. The song went to number one a week later with another brilliant song at number 2 at the same time that was "I just Called To Say I Love You/Stevie Wonder"

I've also got a pair of Tommy Tynan's away shorts and socks (blue and yellow), and one of Alan Birch's away shirts with the No7 on the back (yellow with blue collar). They were given to me by Tommy Tynan at the training ground.

Coincidentally Nez it was No1 the day I first got married. All I can say is that your statue lasted much longer

Ha-ha, no, joking apart, I'm sorry to hear that mate. My relationship of fifty years, (marriage of 45 years) ended six months back.

I'm still trying to get my head around it.

I have a belt that Phil Lynott wore on stage. I think it’s fair to say that Phil was a good sport 😀

Jeepers, that’s tough, Nez, sorry to hear it. Me and Mrs CT have about the same longevity and the idea of a one-sided split up like that would be awful.
