MillersMad Matchthread - The Millers v Port Vale

It is that time again! The pitch looks great, who is number so and so, have you had your holiday yet, how is your lass? plus other questions or other statements you hear on the first day of the season!

Is it great to be back? Usually we have a preconcieved idea of what is going to happen in the season. Last year we were expecting or had been promissed a promotion but this year it is different. It has been a rebuild of the team with many young players. I had said that Hamshaw was happy with the youth we had at the club when he took over and now he will be more than happy with the signings. The trick is getting those young players to blend with the senior players and see if they can give us a decent season. I have no idea of what is going to happen but I am prepaired to give them a chance.

A promotion push by April? It would be nice.

A new part to the matchthread is a little quiz and a trip down memory lane.

    Who Am I?

As a player, he was a midfielder from 1996 to 2014. He started his career with Middlesbrough in 1996, where he stayed for four years. In 2000, he moved on to Port Vale and made over 250 appearances for the club in a six-year stay, picking up a Football League Trophy winners medal in 2001. Between 2006 and 2008, he was signed to Darlington, and in 2008 he joined Rotherham United. Two years later, he transferred to Grimsby Town before he joined Gateshead in May 2011. He scored 67 goals in 588 league and cup appearances throughout his career. He has also appeared for the Republic of Ireland under-21 team and played all of Ireland's five games at the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship.

I will be at Birmingham airport at kick-off so no games for me until after the holidays. So good luck today Millers, it will take time for this new squad to gel and decent results between now and September will be a bonus.

    Bonjour Mr Frog.

    I'll go for Mickey Cummins.

As for the season it's a big, 'let's be patient' time and give Matt the chance to gel and bond these young lads. No excuses though if it all goes tits up and we're sat on the bottom of the table come Xmas. You're judged by results.

I believe we'll finish mid table first time around and that will do for me.

I'm assuming it'll be Zak, Lenny and Raff as a back 3 and that doesn't fill me with much confidence going into this game, but we'll see.

    Millers 1 Port Vale 3.
