    Not Doctor Islay i presume.
I someone can walk from the Stobswell area of Dundee to he railway bridge at Riverside and back home again then their ME cannot be too bad to stop them going back to work.

Imagine walking into Dr. Islay's surgery

Patient - 'Hi Doctor Islay, I seem to have broken my arm'

Dr. Islay - 'Nonsense, looks fine to me'

Patient - 'But it's bruised and the bone's sticking out through the skin, I'm in agony'

Dr. Islay - 'Superficial bruising and that's just your elbow - you're imagining the pain'

Patient - 'But the blood doctor, the blood!!'

Dr. Islay - 'I've made my diagnosis based on my fatally flawed and completely outdated opinion. Not only that but you clearly walked here; now, get to work'

I had an operation (key hole) a few years back and was signed off work for a week after it. I was also told to stay active and to get out and about walking as soon as I could; I walked from Downfield to Coldside and back the next day and was exhausted afterwards. Just because someone's signed off work it doesn't mean they're disabled and can't get on with their lives.
No wonder that you were exhausted after walking that distance. A fit person could find that a long walk let alone someone who had very recently had undergone an operation by key hole surgery.
About thirty years ago a Downfield Golf Club member who lived near me had a hip replacement operation. He was told by his consultant to take exercise.
This member decided to play in a shot gun foursomes members golf competition at Downfield GC. Unfortunately he started at the 16th tee which is the highest part of the course. The member got round the course using his walking stick and was exhausted by the time he got back to the clubhouse at the end of the competition.
A couple of weeks later when I was out walking our dog I bumped into him out for a walk. He told me about playing in the shot gun foursome golf competition at Downfield GC and how his consultant told him to take exercise.
I replied that he probably meant a walk round Lochee Park not 18 holes of golf in a shotgun foursomes competition starting at the 16th tee.
My father who was a PE teacher used to say ‘everything in moderation, exercise for the mugs’.

It's around 3 miles total. Quite literally no distance at all.

I find it incredible that a PE teacher would ever describe exercise as being 'for the mugs'.

    I've reconsidered, seems acceptable.

A walk of three miles shortly after keyhole surgery would be no problem for an experienced hill walker like yourself but a lot more daunting for a person who took a lot less exercise. Each to their own.

I do not know what score that person had but from memory I think that he had to end his round prematurely due to pain in his hip.

What my father was trying to explain was that people should take exercise in moderation and not to injure themselves taking too much exercise.
