It's an idea I've often favoured but if they were to implement it they would probably have to reduce playing time anyway or games would last much longer (~2.5-3.0 hours as typically in a 45+m half the ball is currently only in play around 32m). This is not necessarily a problem for 3pm kick-offs but would certainly be one for 8pm kick-offs with transportation etc.

I can't see that happening but a similar approach to that in rugby where the clock could be stopped for treatment to injuries and substitutions etc would make sense. The time left to play should also be made visible to everyone in the stadium.
There was once a rule that a goalkeeper had to release the ball within 6 seconds. Does that still exist because, if so it's never enforced? Perhaps it would speed things up if an indirect free kick was awarded to the opposition every time the goalkeeper held onto the ball for longer than that.

They keep trying these "new" rules but they soon fade into the memory..............They'd rather ferk about with the offside rule.

Absolutely. Maybe timekeeping could be something the 4th Official is responsible for because I'm not really sure what else they do apart from take abuse from managers about things they have no control over.
