The stats term would be "mutual exclusivity" - ie the number of teams promoted is 1 out of 4, so the study needs to show the probability of each position having been promoted against the 0.25 chance of it being a playoff.
So in terms of overall probability each team has a 0.25 chance and the third place team has been promoted 0.35 times out of 100 - therefore has a higher probability of promotion than the others individual probabilities - the sum of all possible outcomes MUST add up to 1 but there is mutual exclusivity that 4 and 5 cannot BOTH be promoted.
