Absolute codswolop. All this PC/rasist rubbish is driving me round the bend. The only people raising it have nothing better to do with their closed minds. Do I get upset and get on my high horse if I'm called a sheep sh##ger? No. Do forest supporters get upset when we call them red dogs? No Is Malky Mackay upset that they don't call him Malcolm? No. The Daily Mail dragged all this up by accessing private emails a love keep the story going talk about a storm in a tea cup. I think a lot of people won't public ally comment on such things for fear of being called rasist themselves. What's happened to free speach in this country England, Great Britain that's is. For gods sake get a life.

[quote="Toggles"]Why are people soooo upset when someone has asked them not to use a word that they find offensive? People can make mistakes, but it is generally considered nowadays that referring to someone as a 'paki' is not very nice, and hasn't been for quite some time. Just as the term 'spazstick (sic) became to be seen as offensive by people who got called it, and they asked people to not use it.

People always turn these arguments about offensive words into a debate about 'why can't we be proud to be English/British without shame', or whatever. This just turns me away from what is sometimes an engaging debate about national identity. There are many things I'm proud of this country for and wish to defend, my 'right' to not have people being upset when I call them a paki or a spaz is not one of them. Nor is trying to blame most of our society's ills on recent influx of immigrants or labelling everyone who stands up against something that they think

    Excellent post from Toggles.

It doesn't wash for people to claim certain terms are OK to use because it's what WE do. The word Paki was and is used to be offensive, however much people try to delude themselves otherwise. I think inwardly we know whether a term or description of a group is offensive or not.

As Toggles said, just try to be nice and apologise if you inadvertently cause upset.

It's not as simple as that. Words tend to have more than one definition - and it's not always derogatory. And yes I often think if things might have been different if we weren't so quick to wash our Mickey taking culture down the toilet and expect outsiders to adapt to our culture rather than the other way round. But I take your point the word 'paki' can be, and often is extremely vitriolic.

However, even if it is derogatory, does that automatically make it bad? The consensus seems to be yes it does. But why? See chris rocks - 'black people vs 'niggers'. Not all black Americans are 'niggers' just like not all white Am

    Indeed!

Hadn't realised the time and missed first part of the match to have a moan on a forum.

I need to get a grip and look at my priorities. Nothing more important than cheering on the Rams!

The trouble with free speech is that it can be used to intimidate and bully people - with free speech comes an understanding that there needs to be a simple human understanding that words have been used historically in conjunction with the unacceptabl

[quote="swaledale"]dave whelen is a thoroughly decent bloke and one of the good guys in football. very honest and calls a spade a spade. I have much respect for him.

what i'll say in defence of tan is that the problem with words like 'chink'ni is that it can be used inaccurately, which is what whelen has done in this instance. tan is not Chinese (chink) he's actually Malaysian. so it's fair for him to be a bit upset by the situation. I don't think dave whelen is one bit racist from what I know of him but in this case he's been unwittingly ignorant.

on a grander scale I'd like to ask who it is that actually classifies these words as racist, offensive and or taboo?

there seems to be a 'group' for everything now days. a ridiculous sounding one on SSN today sticking their noses in ched evans' business. we've got kick it out sticking they're nose in dave whelen's business - that is his decision to appoint malkay McKa
