    Tan on Whelan

Tan calls Whelan a racist for referring to the Chinese as 'chinks'. Is this racism? Is it racist to call the Welsh 'Taffies'? Or the British 'Limeys' or the Americans 'yanks'?
It's not a derogatory term, it has no meaning so I can't see it myself. And this from a man who comes into a city and tries to change its identity.
Give me Whelan over Tan any day.

dave whelen is a thoroughly decent bloke and one of the good guys in football. very honest and calls a spade a spade. I have much respect for him.

what i'll say in defence of tan is that the problem with words like 'chink' is that it can be used inaccurately, which is what whelen has done in this instance. tan is not Chinese (chink) he's actually Malaysian. so it's fair for him to be a bit upset by the situation. I don't think dave whelen is one bit racist from what I know of him but in this case he's been unwittingly ignorant.

on a grander scale I'd like to ask who it is that actually classifies these words as racist, offensive and or taboo?

there seems to be a 'group' for everything now days. a ridiculous sounding one on SSN today sticking their noses in ched evans' business. we've got kick it out sticking they're nose in dave whelen's business - that is his decision to appoint malkay McKay as manager long before chinkgate. what the **** has it got to do with them who he appoints

You've both lived in Northern England too long, all those terms of racist.

We don't chant "Dirty northern b'stards" to ourselves do we, so why do you think its OK calling people of different racess?

One day, future generations will all be light brown with putty noses and slitty eyes and it won't matter any more ...

I have got to agree with you. I raised a similar point when someone complained about someone referring to a Pakistan as a Paki; What is the difference between that and calling someone from Australia an Aussie??

they're two different things though. chink is another word for someone fromchina. 'northern' is another word for someone from the north.

it's not like he said dirty chink *******. two different intentions altogether.

I don't accept that whelen was 'calling him a' but this is my whole point. you've interpreted it as tan being called a whereas I think it's more a point of reference.

exactly what I was referring to in my first post old timer. paki once upon a time was short for someone from Pakistan. at some point down the line someone decided it was offensive and so the word became taboo.

this is slightly different though as many people have used the word as if to call someone from Pakistan a n

    It's completely different!!

Aussies call themselves Aussies. Pakistani's call themselves Pakistani's not Paki's!! The latter is deliberately used as a derogatory term and usually has a word beginning with 'b' after it.

Same as referring to Jewish people as being greedy money grabbers which is basically what he was saying.

I just saw the sky news report about the white van man and his England flag hanging out of the window and how 61% of people interviewed thought it was patriotic and 24% thought it was racist. Then he walks out of his front door and he's a thick set skinhead who looks like he wants a fight!

The whole World is becoming too sensitive.
I have had my email address rejected a couple of times as it contains the word limey.
    Bloody ridiculous.
