Sounds like an attempt at damage limitation.
I hope it's enough to placate the angry mob but a good performance and 3 points for the team tomorrow night will be the best response.

He needs a change of strategy, he will never be a SE who courted the fans, or a NW who relished the atmosphere and who encouraged a siege mentality.

He could really do with some assistance in PR, hes currently a cross between Phil Henson and mad Andy Scott

I believed it was genuinely an unfortunate choice of words and felt that was the case when fans began to react. An "explanation" of what he meant was very much on the cards. But the point is he should be better at this than he is in such a public role and, as gm_gm rightly suggests, he may need some professional help with how he projects himself.

Even with this "what I really meant" statement he still seems to be arguing with the fans when he says "I didn't mention one word about picking a fight so I don't know how that got misinterpreted at the press conference." Instead of just saying "I used words that could have been misunderstood and I'm sorry" he doesn't seem to be able to stop himself from deflecting the blame on to others. A definite case of " when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging..."

I think he would make what is already an uphill battle a lot easier for himself if he took some advice on what to say and how to say it and what the consequences are of his body language. It would be far less important if he was getting us off to a flying start but at the moment it really is not helping. His Olympian distancing himself is just coming over as arrogance.

Blimey, the way his interviews are analysed so much, maybe we should get a politician as manager instead. I hear Cameron's not doing owt at the moment.

Back in the day - when Rotherham United were victimised by stupid police bills - sometimes there were more horses than the charge of the life brigade - and the Swansea man only death on Millmoor lane - trampled by a police horse!

Anyway - I volunteered as a steward to get the police out of the ground - I served for a good while but I ended my illustrious career being the home dug out protection!

Great place to see everything football - chats about who's doing what on the pitch and the managers thoughts.

The manager was Phill Henson and the stick he took was very similar to what's being said ( by some ) on here!

    CONSTANT ABUSE - typically :

    "Henson you've no heart"
    "Henson show some passion"
    "Henson get out and shout"....etc.

I had to physically restrain some "gentlemen" who lost it bigstyle! But he took it without too much alarm - and anyway he could rely on me...lol

One wet winter Tuesday night everthing changed ! Henson suddenly became animated - he shouted from the dug out to the jeers of those on the "best side"
(to be honest they just loved bear bating).

He eventually came out of his polycarbonate she'll - in his white mac and waving his arms he screamed at the players shouting this that ant tuther!

WELL THE ABUSE THAT MAN GOT !

    "SIT DOWN YOU @#$/@#$/"

"YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT"

    "FFFN THIS - FFFN THAT"

The best side eat him alive - verbally anyway - they did rush down the steps and I was off my seat ready for a punch up....

But I felt so sorry for Henson - he tried but he was not an EVO'

If your idea of a manager is a comedian then Jimmy NICK NICK Davison would be perfect!

He is our manager and I for one would not like a one on one with the guy he'd serously do damage - he's busy - leave him alone !

Judge him at Christmas - we'll be fine
( touch wood ) BUT PULLING HIM DOWN AND THE PLAYERS DOES NOT HELP ANYONE!

    HE'LL NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE !
