Geldof's actions on the Thames may, IMO, have inadvertantly pushed a few thousand dithering Remainers towards voting Leave. If I'd gone on emotions not facts He would have been the reason I voted Leave. Such a shame, as a teenager I saw him as a kindred spirit when he fronted The Boomtown Rats, I admired him for his ability to mobilize during Band/Live Aid, but now I just see him as an irritating poor man's Bono/Karaoke Russell Brand

Yep, agree with that Andy...important figure at the end of the seventies and the original Live Aid was a huge achievement but since then he seems to have become a bit of an self important irritant.

Taking a wider view of this, I believe that the interference of celebrities in the EU referendum debate (mostly on the Remain side) did much more harm than good, and that's a factor of the disappearance of the 'deference' culture partly fuelled by social media (unless you use facebook you cannot imagine all the ways folk express their hatred for Russell Brand for instance) and partly fuelled by (particularly) the Jimmy Saville revelations

    Wasn't Corbyn traditionally anti EU?

But really, the Geldof love in above (I hate the talentless dick) and Blair, is there anything more off putting than irritating self obsessive celebrities trying to get some extra followers?

Well said that man - the cult of celebrity really grinds my gears. One of the most appalling developments of the 21st Century sadly - who gives a **** what they think: think for yourselves, not blindly follow the thoughts of a generally brain dead person who is famous for, um, being famous?

The old phrase 'never meet your heroes' has in the modern age become 'never read your heroes' facebook or twitter feeds'.

I noticed that Clinton was rolling out the celebrities on her campaign and it didn't do her much good.

Tbf they're all at it...Trump was more than happy to be endorsed by such luminaries as Mike Tyson, Jon Voight, Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan and Ted Nugent but I agree with all those who question the cult of celebrity...who cares what someone thinks just because they're a successful sports/pop star?
On the other hand I would take more notice of the likes of Branson - on subjects such as transport and the economy - and Attenborough - on the environment - than most mealy mouthed politicians.
