Welcome back our kid. Nice to see you out of hibernation for a short while.
Don't want to be too pedantic PGW but I'm sure there were more than 54,000 at that game.

Of course you're the older wiser one so I stand to be corrected.
    Hull 3-2 Millers

    keep in touch.

Millers, of course, won 2-0. One of our finest hours....
That wasn't the highest though. The biggest ever attendance featuring Rotherham was actually the preceding replay at Highbury 1959-60 they were involved in some epic FA Cup battles with mighty Arsenal. The teams drew at Millmoor in a third round tie and against the odds they drew in the replay at Highbury in front of a crowd of 57,598, the highest ever for a Rotherham game.

Thanks for that, Nardendee. I didn't think to check the previous match given that the Rotherham contingent would have been so small. You're right of course.

While having a drink and a chat with Roy Ironside and Barry Webster a couple of years ago, we spoke about this series of games and it amused me to hear that the two of them went to the match in Sheffield on the tram and chatted with the fans on the way. Can you imagine players today going to take part in a match in front of more than 56,000 people on the local transport system?!

That's very interesting Parkgate considering Archiemiller was not born until 1951 😋😏

Thank you both for taking the sting out of my tale, we shouldn't let the facts spoil a tall story.

Speaking of decent crowds and games against Hull City:

I have a souvenir booklet from the 1950-51 season when we won promotion to the second tier for the first time.
The FA cup details were as follows:

Ist round away at Darlington we won 7 - 2 in front of 10,168 Jack Shaw got 5
2nd round home to Forest we won 3 - 0 in front of 22,000 Shaw hat-trick
3rd round home to Donny we won 2-1 in front of 22,000 Shaw and Danny Williams scored
4th round we lost 2 - 0 away at Hull in front of 50,048

I was at the Hull game as a 8 year old, thing that I remember most was going on the train to Boothfery station which was at side of the ground, also was at all the three ties against Arsenal, big crowd at Highbury and Rileys took lots of coaches,The Hillsbro replay was along side our win at Newcastle in 53 which I also went to are our two best ever performances because we won,one we lost against Man U at millmoor when we were robbed of victory by Jack Taylor the ref, also ranks as one of the greats. After the Hillsbro game we got dumped by Brighton 0-6 in a replay at Highbury, another low point in my support for my club.Today was another.

A very enjoyable post hotun - thank you. I followed the three Arsenal games but was only just beginning to get interested in the Millers as a 9 year old and had to rely on friends of my parents for what was happening. (I'm from a totally non-footballing family.)

The number of people who still recall these great games in the fifties and early sixties is dwindling - and the number who know how to get onto message boards like this and can tell others about them is extremely small - keep it up!
