Thread: o/t I'm beginning to think that middle class people deserve their comforts.

o/t I'm beginning to think that middle class people deserve their comforts.

They just make better lifestyle choices than the lower orders.

Take to today for example. At Sheffield station, many middle class professional types and fresh faced middle class students dressed in hiking gear were chatting cheerfully on the platform waiting for the train to Grindelford/ Hathersage/ Hope etc.

There was no negative or bitter conversations just cheerful banter and some useful information about good walks in the Derbyshire area. I bumped into a few of these groups at Hope, and they were polite and well behaved. Having walked 3 or 4 miles and having worked up an appetite they were now heading to local cafes and pubs to refresh themselves. Later in the day I boarded the same train as these very pleasant people. They weren't inebriated, they were happy and jolly and invigorated by our magnificent countryside and positive conversations with decent people.

Then on the way home an ex-work mate....who is from the lower orders, but who does earn decent money, came staggering out of a public house. He was swearing and shouting and told me he was waiting to "kick someone's head in" who had provoked him. He told me had been out since 11am ( it was now 7pm) and had " pissed 150 quid up the wall" spending it on fags, booze, and gambling. He was in a foul temper and clearly his binge had not produced any desirable consequences nor had it uplifted his mood. This was in contrast to the middle class hiker types, who by my estimation had spent no more than 30 pound each and yet had a cheerful demeanour, had engaged in physical exercise and dare I say were spiritually nourished by a countryside walk.

Now we can't put this down to the supposed evils of the class system. The middle class hikers have just made better choices than my ex work mate from the lower orders.

There are always exceptions but I think the middle classes on the whole actually deserve their comforts. They are more deserving of a good quality of life. Give some middle class hikers 20 grand and they would spend it on wholesome pursuits. Give the same amount of cash to the grummets and they would drink themselves senseless. It's time you stopped giving the middle classes a hard time. They are just......... better people.

You present this as some kind of revelation. I had always assumed that the labelling of the groups as lower, middle and upper class denoted an ascending hierarchy of quality.

Yes, this is such an obvious Kempo tribute to himself..... as he sat Rick Wakeman-like, behind the banks of keybords representing his imaginary friends, he has accidentally signed himself off as IBS..... need to concetrate a bit harder - just imagine if a real doctor made that kind of error! Was the drunken ex-workmate a doctor? Health service beancounter perhaps? LOL

    What is middle class nowadays?

When I was a kid I thought anyone who had a car was middle class.

Even when I started work in '78 I thought anyone who lived in a semi detached was middle class.

I'm working class always have been, I drive a van for a living ffs but I've got a middle class standard of living.

So I've come to the conclusion. class is all in the mind!

Loyal I can relate to that pal. Working class know my roots and my place but have done okay and have to say I too live a middle class lifestyle. Earned it so I spend it!

Get where Kempo's coming from though. You can pay Scum a million pound a year but they will always be Scum it's in their DNA.

Talk to any Socialist and they have a crack-pot idea of the link between "goodness" and being middle class. They claim that because the middle-classes are the dominant- force in society, it is their idea of goodness and quality which is represented in the media, a media which is dominated by the middle-classes. They are therefore touting the middle class way of living as being good. So the Socialists claim that there is a bias here "people are judged to be good because they are middle-class"

This is nonsense of course. It is in fact the other way round: "people are middle-class because they are or have been good". They maintain or ascend to that particular class because they have not been selfish and hedonistic. Nor have they made poor choices. They have been prudent, patient and wise.

On the whole the middle classes deserve their rewards. They are decent and deserve a decent life.

Well, I'm as working class as they come, but I get to spend 52 weeks a year on the finest beach in the US, whereas most of the other people on it work 50 weeks of the year just to spend the other 2 with me.
Mind you, it can get quite cold at night and I often get moved on by the local sheriff.
