Yes, the number of homeless people is increasing year on year. A major contributor to this problem is that there are simply not enough affordable homes, either on the market or being built. There are two sides to this coin though, one side is not enough housing available for the people looking for somewhere to live, the other side is more people looking for housing than the housing market can supply.

One side can be addressed by an increase in house building, the problem from the other side is more difficult to resolve, that Grauniad piece of BT's above is from 2013, in the four years since then the population of the UK has increased by 2 million, almost entirely due to immigration, and these people need somewhere to live. The miracle is that the number of homeless people isn't rising much more with such a huge population growth year on year.

But this is the elephant in the room, no one wants to talk about it, an increase in homelessness is an inevitable consequence of open borders, free movement of people within the EU. But anyone suggesting that we try to regain control of our borders and attempt to reduce the increase in population growth is howled down as a racist bigot, and all the while the number of homeless grows and we expect our tiny overcrowded island to accomodate an additional half a million people year on year. Can't be done.

    .

...do need an increase in affordable housing - as those on low income can hardly afford much of any decency in the private rented sector - and if they can squeeze something...there's little or no way they can save enough for a home of their own - especially when the cost of running one - is on average half of the household income - and if when living on that precipice.....what happens when there's nothing left to balance them....they'll fall - deeper into debt and lose it all.....then they're a burden on the system, so why does the system not help itself.....why are the basics, such as a roof over the head and a little light and heat so costly - is it because those who are running it....want it that way - and prefer to compound the weakness.
it's an Evil disease....this Profits Before People.

I think building new affordable housing is good, but I don't think it will help much, I remember a few years ago you was only allowed a mortgage up to 3 and a half times your combined wages (couples), nowadays house prices have gone through the roof and the normal people just cannot afford a mortgage, even with that fancy word "affordable house price" attached to it with everything else bar wages rising, I forget which Government implemented some fancy thing where they helped FFS, which IMO was well short of rectifying the situation and just done for show.
