Don't allow o/t posts!.
If it isn't football related, don't post it.
Plenty of other sites where folk can post topics about Brexit, Refugees, Music etc.
Keep it to football, after all, it's Millersmad, not Politicsmad, Musicmad etc!.
Not many of the football threads get more than 2 pages.
Emotions must play a big part in this and news from the club or lack of it at times.
One of the things that must frustrate folk is when they see an O/T thread running for a long time when they look on the board for news from the club or football related topics.
I was hoping that the longer threads could slide down the board because when they get to a certain length we find that the same people are posting on them. They know where these threads are and can easitly find them whilts football threads take priority at the top of the board.
There aren't that many options that the mods have and finding what seems like a good method which will please the majority won't please all.
Although I'm an advocate for keeping to a single board, I have to say that this may be a good point in favour of some sort of action.
If there is solid evidence that football related posts are being moved too quickly off the 'front page' because several lengthy but, let's say, minority interest OT posts are hogging too much of the available space, then it needs to be addressed
At the moment my instinct tells me that it's not such a big problem - but given that I'm happy to look at a wide range of topics I may not be that aware of it.
Frog, does your approach of moving OT posts that have been around a long time, or appear to have run their course, actually help solve this problem? ie do they disappear from the front page more quickly? I don't get the impression that it does since they are still visibly logged in the front page space.
Ideally you need a system that removes OT posts that have reached predefined time/response limits and puts them in another place. Those who want to can then go to that place and carry on reading/participating. There should then be a single sticky on the main board which keeps a rolling 7 day log of OT posts that have been moved. Probably not going to happen with the technology we have...
No matter how old a thread is if it gets a post on it it goes straight to the top as you'll see when the threads get bumped. I've found that when I have transferred a thread to the other board they slide down the board even when someone posts on them. Ther aren't that many threads started really. I know it sounds a bit surprising but if only 6 threads get started a day then organically a thread without any posts will take 4 days to leave the front page and this time starts again any time someone posts on one. Match days an Sundays ofted sees the largest number of threads started so threads dissapear quicker.
We don't have the tools that give us the chance to set a a removals date for threads that I have fond and that's why I'm messing about a bit with what I have.
The reason for moving threads to the other board is to allow them to move down the front page quicker but still let people who want to read or post on them do so. They are interesting to the minority of the members once they've past a certain point and to have them keep coming to the top of the board is unfair on members that dislike the O/T Threads. It can look as though nothing has changed i they keep at the top of the board for a week or two.
It's down to CAM or myself to move them and make the decision though. That is until I can find a better method.
Who was it that rambled on about pleasing people all of the time and some of the time that ends up packing it all in because they end up please no one?
To be honest froggy you've ran a poll which clearly came out in favour of keeping it as is so as the title says, don't really understand the issue...i just really don't know how hard it is for the doubters to just ignore O/T threads.
I cannot for the life of me get why folk get so uptight about it!
It is but for years it has had O/T threads. When you go to the match do you only talk about football? The beer may be crap so the history of beers and pubs may come into the conversations. You may walk passed a beggar or you may talk of the council and price raises of petrol.
The thing I think we need to do is keep the football threads at the top but give folk the chance to chat about other things and keep that side of things out of the football threads.
