Back on topic, and a reflection of my unusual taste in sport. This is almost without doubt the most famous 'move' in US motorsport, and prompted a universal rule change, that a driver has to keep at least some of the footprint of his car within the track limits when gaining or retaining a place. This is one on my list I watched 'live', I think on Eurosport, one sunday eve. i've probably bored everyone with the admiration I have for this fellah before, but no apologies for that

the maneouvre is known in motorsport circles as 'The Pass'

Good thread Rom...better than those dreadful prizes.
    Botham’s (and Willis’) Ashes.
    Vaughan’s Ashes.
    Flintoff’s run out.
Jonny Wilkinsons’s drop goal to win the RU World Cup.
Lancashire beating Gloucester in the dark at Old Trafford 1971.

    P.S. Scalextric doesn’t count Andy.

In fact I'd say that bog snorkeling is more of a sport than American Scalextric - what sort of a sport is it when you sit down all the time and depend on technology to win, or lose, it for you? At least rowing or cycling requires manpower rather than mechanical horse power

I actually think the greatest sporting moments are the heroic failures: the Jamaican Bobsleigh team, Eddie the Eagle, Eric the Eel, Elise Christie, the Scotland football team and, from my work arena the "Argo Merchant" - the world's most unlucky ship

You are so wrong there Rog, both in overstating the technology impact on USA single-seater racing (at that time it was a virtual 'spec' series which very much showcased the best drivers) and understating the technology in cycling (I can't comment on rowing)

Just to rub it in, and I'm not even going to explain this one other than to say the message isn't about the sport in question, and to admit that when this happened I have never seen so many blokes openly crying with joy apart from at Mott the Hoople's comeback gig.

An actual moment was staying up til whatever time for Bruno v Tyson and listening on the radio as Bruno landed a punch that stopped the unbeatable Tyson in his tracks and for that moment thought big frank could do it. Unfortunately wasnt to be for frank or 'arry

‘Scotland football team’ ...lol! Actually you could have left out the words ‘heroic’ and ‘football’ and you’d have been right about most things Scottish.
I disagree with your specific ‘failure’ examples but the Brownlee Brothers thing, where one helped the other make the finish, and Cooper v Clay all those years ago are amongst my most memorable sporting moments.

    P.S. What’s the book Andy?

Ah the Corintian spirit RA, gotta agree with you there

My favourite is Peter Collins following team protocol (not orders) and giving up his car, and with it HIS chance of being World Drivers Champion, to a driver he considered his senior, Juan Manual Fangio, allowing HIM to become WDC.
