When I was little I would read about his rivalry with John Landy culminating in their meeting when both broke 4 minutes. Saw it for the first time this week. A great race. A great athlete.

    RIP Roger Bannister

    A true legend.

I was a decent runner in my late 20’s and trained really hard and anybody who’s ever done some half serious running will tell you just how difficult a 4 minutes mile even with today’s superb footwear and knowledge.

Even at my peak I think my fastest mile time was between 4.30 and 4.45 and to do that was gut wrenching and I cannot fathom how I’d have trimmed even another few seconds off that so Bannister’s feat was truly breathtaking.

Consider the record now stands at 3.43 and that has now stood for almost 19 years.

That is an unbelievable pace to sustain for a mile........56 seconds for each 400 metre lap and even an elite international runner is happy to do a 400 metre race in 44-46 seconds.

People like Sir Roger are very special athletes and also,a very nice man by all accounts.

    RIP to a true giant.

Running gets you nowhere very fast, humans along with sloths and tortoises are amongst the slowest creatures on earth. The intelligent humans discovered this years ago and learned to ride horses, camels, elephants, etc.

There is a cyclist who goes up the A449 every morning, full lycra, light on head, you've all seen the tools. Traffic has to swerve to miss him and the idiots who drive on that road aren't the most careful of drivers to say the least.
Last Friday in the awful conditions he was still there, standing on the pedals, his arse cheeks going like a woofters in heat.
The t wat obviously works in an office as he has so much energy to burn.
I am going to take a mop with me, push it out the passenger window and have him off.
I have always wanted to have a go at jousting.

So how far do you run each night Des to make up for the 8 hours sat on your a r s e in the drivers cab?

The “office worker” does more exercise than you walking to the coffee machine whilst at work :-))

Don't drive now Mick, haven't for a few years, doing stuff like fly tip and open spaces, walking up to 6-10 miles a day in all weathers and lifting a few tons of fridge freezers and settees as well digging out.
Not bad for someone coming 63 eh? Saves a fortune in Gym fees.
