Your theory? It is one I have posted here and elsewhere several days ago. Apologies if you got in there first

I remember when Paul McGrath was signen by Jim Smith, he was nearly 37. He came here with two very badly damaged knees, he never trained and just turned up for matches.
That year he was our best player by a country mile and kept us up. He wasn't a greyhound just an experienced footballer who oozed class. Terry the same IMO but fitter!

Very good point. McGrath was, and remains, one of my favourite players...he was absolute class that season.

I read his book and he was very complimentary about Derby and in particular Jim Smith for allowing him not to train.

Ledley King was probably the classiest English centre half I've seen in the past 20yrs but his knees limited his training and ultimately his career.

JT is a great reader of the game and could be a very useful defensive coach.

I read that book Manx (back from the brink) anyone who hasn't read it should get a copy. What a life he had! A great read.

Likewise, and unlike many biographies, his made me feel more admiration for him. I've lent my copy to a couple of folk with the same troubles he had (no, not dodgy knees)

Yep...completely agree...one of the best biographies I’ve read.
Confronting your own demons is something I truly admire and one of the reasons (tin hat time) why elsewhere I’ve suggested I had more respect for Mackay than Clough.
