Fracking is responsible for a quadruple increased threat to global warming but along with the greedy MNC's and corrupt politicians don't let facts get in the way of your adherence to neoliberalism sinkov.

More lefty drivel BT, the increased use of natural gas in the USA has reduced CO2 emissions, despite their economy continuing to grow, while India and China in particular, while signing up to the Paris agreement, continue to build coal-fired power stations at an enormous rate, to supply energy to their own growing economies. The Donald, god bless him, has seen through this nonsense and refuses to allow the USA to pay for this scam.

What is neo-liberalism BT, I'm not a political animal like you, I have no idea what it is. And I certainly can't be arsed to google it to find out ? You're not getting me confused with 59/60 are you, he's some sort of a liberal isn't he ?

    noun
    noun: neoliberalism
a modified form of liberalism tending to favour free-market capitalism.

I'm more of a neo neo liberal myself. How about you?

'bout time we started writing our manifesto up.

(Can I do the energy bit?)

59/60, you are right, we import gas from dodgy countries, while sitting on untold reserves of the stuff. It's insanity, but the Luddites are those that refuse to even countenance us using our own massive reserves of natural gas, that can be extricated cheaply and safely.

You talk about technological progress, ffs look around, what do you see everywhere despoiling the countryside ? You might call them wind turbines, but in effect they're windmills, medieval technology, is that what you call progress ?

The beauty of the wind turbines is the fact that, if it gets too windy, they daren't switch them on because they set on fire! Technological advance ----I wonder.

I have to laugh at some of the arguments quoted above because they are just like statistics and can be used any way you want depending on which side of the divide you are.
The plain fact is that we are being supplied with energy from 'dodgy' countries because we just have not looked after the infrastructure for many, many years. The National Grid has been close to breaking point for a long time and the problems have been ignored by successive governments.
Similarly, new energy plans which needed investment have also been ignored to a certain extent until we now reach a point that it is barely cost effective.
Heads have been buried in the sand by politicians who have been looking after their own interests for many years and who, with a few exceptions, could not give a damn about the United Kingdom.

Which is why I am apolitical! Mind you, living where I do, it makes no difference what you vote because Mister Lavery would be elected anyway!

Several of you have had a pop about wind power - and i agree with you on most of it. As far as i am concerned they are OK out at sea but I don't want to see any on our landscapes.
Yes, when there is not enough wind/too much wind they are useless.

also agree with Supersub in that our politicians have known we will reach a crisis in energy supply very soon, but they have done sod all about it.

This thread is about tidal power. it is totally predictable (for centuries in the future actually), it's totally clean and once the structure is built it will provide us with practically free energy for at least 90 years. It also has extremely low maintenance costs attached.

To me we get the best of all worlds, security of supply, 100% predictability of supply, 100% green and we are not relying on a dodgy country to supply us - it is OUR natural resource.

What's not to like? It just needs our politicians to plan further ahead than the 4/5 year election cycle and do the right thing for our country for once.

All well put together 1959_60, however, you have not thought about the fact that everything would be clogged up with plastic within weeks of it all opening and we would be worse off than before, having spent billions on the project.
This is where the government really missed a trick in their statements because they hadn't even thought about that aspect --even though it is prominent in every news bulletin you see.
