I repeatedly see on here barrels full of bile aimed at our recruitment team - let's establish the facts and then decide?
Let's allow this one to run for a bit to get an informed, unprejudiced answer to a honest question?
If other teams with less to offer eg not our first season in the prem, European football can make signings why can't we there has to be something somewhere not quite right either wage structure, fees we offer, how we go about business. take Jay Rod all summer we heard how he wanted to come back and SD wanted him here yet he is still scoring for WBA what went wrong there we had all summer to sort it out and yet didn't same with Dawson and the WBA are difficult to deal with doesn't wash Newcastle didn't have that problem they offered a deal that was attractive to them, I still think if we had pulled our finger out with Mawson and not let it drag on messing around with offering bits and bobs until other teams got involved he would have been a Claret if a team wants 20-25m then offer them something close. We are always late to the party every window with most business last minute signings which smacks of desperation Vydra Hart Gibson all good players but obviously desperate moves to get bodies in ok hart was forced on us due to injuries but MV & BG does anybody really think they were the ones we really wanted.
I think its us who are the difficult ones to deal with offering nowhere near the asking price or instalments & add ons etc when the selling team know we have money. If you go to buy a 30k Audi and offer 15k you get shown the door but offer 27k and you might just get it for less than the 30k
If we were to use the Rodriguez example to epitomise the skills or otherwise of our recruitment team, you would have to conclude they are a shambles. However, we need to look at our successes as well as our failures.
I used to trade and deal in a very difficult market-albeit nothing to do with football. However if I valued something at £50.000 and somebody offered me an insulting £30.000 bid I would politely show them the door.If they persisted with insulting incremental bids then nothing pleased me more than to sell the item at £45-47.000 to another buyer then wait for the call with the next insulting bid only to inform them the item was sold.Invariably the real customers learnt by their mistakes and made respectable offers on future items.Unfortunately BFC do not learn by their mistakes.
BFC tactics only work if the selling club is skint and it was obvious from day one both WBA and Swansea were not.
When someone in authority has the balls to tell it like it is we will listen and then judge.
In the meantime we judge on results--and there isn't too much to jump for joy.
One unfit for purpose new player (when we need all hands to the pump right now).
One enforced Goalkeeping need when our stokes suddenly became bare.
One central defender when it looked like we were losing Mee.
Nothing to enthuse about and no reason to believe the club is moving forward.
At best we are treading water.
But why?
Not only are they incompetent, they're a bloody menace. I can think of three players recently who went on strike at their club in order to facilitate a move to Burnley, Tarkowski, Dawson and Stephens, Jay didn't go on strike but made it known publicly that he wanted a move. Only one of those players actually ended up with us, the other three were left to face the consequences with their club's fans. If I was a player and we were reported to be interested, I'd be inclined to tell BFC to feck off and look elsewhere.
And although I don't know exactly how they work, I do know, from a source I cannot and will not disclose for obvious reasons, that there are people working for BFC who think they aren't up to the job either.
It’s an interesting topic to be honest , though I’m not sure that the recruiters are totally to blame,
Dyche has something to do with it as he’s non trusting of non English or premiership players , so if they don’t fit the criteria and he’s doesn’t have the knowledge of them I think probably this has something to do with people not coming to us.
Having said that the Rodriguez saga was I think our board just thinking that WBA only paid 12 million last year and they are expecting us to put another 7-8 million on top of that ( they can’t grasp that is what he’s worth in the market place.)
But on the other foot we gladly sold Gray and Keane making the extra profit on their costs.
I’m sure it costs a lot to have European scouting arm but Imo we need to sort it ( or invest more in it than we do now ), to take us forward as players already here in our league will command more money especially if they are English prospects.
Overall I think we are just looking for the safe bet all the time with little risk involved ( although we panicked a bit this time I think when transfers didn’t happen ).
Sadly football just isn’t like that is it , I mean look at Kante bought for peanuts and now could grace any team in the world must be 80 million in value.
The Europa scouts need to find an odd one of them a year that would be the answer.
I’m a little wary of where we are financially tbh and I want us to stay in control of finance and not blow the lot , however ( and I didn’t think I’d say this ) I think it maybe time for some outside investment with a few new ideas attached to make us progressive.
I posted pre season about us standing still and not being progressive and how it can catch you out in this league ——- I think it’s happening and January might be a busier window for us to try and keep us competitive in this league.
I guess it depends what you think the outcome of the debate will be and what you plan to use it for?
Rating good bad or hopeless needs more thought. Excellent average missing. What’s the boundary between bad and hopeless
Who are the recruitment team, the spotters identifying possibles, the sifters who choose who to go for, the club negotiators, the player negotiators or the persons setting the parameters of affordability.
Are we picking the right players - overall yes
Are we sifting them so they fit largely - yes but D4 took a while and maybe Nahki may not fit.
We seem to have negotiated with some clubs well and others not so well. Getting Jack from Swansea but not getting Mawson at all and missing on Clucas - was that medically related though?
We can’t afford to splash the cash and we don’t know how clubs value players. No one seems to like TM but it is one tool ( I believe clubs have access to a similar tool) and if a player is valued on there at £5m an offer of £7m might tempt some wanting to sell. If a club wants to hold on and demands £20m for that player it looks like we undervalue them. Would you wish us to offer £20m for that player, without knowing the clubs valuation.
Is the medical team doing well - yes query Nahki and Clucas
We seem to struggle getting some players over the line and that may well be wages or terms and conditions.
Are we offering too little. - There are lots of other clubs paying some players our wages but most have a few on much higher levels as do some championship clubs.
Are some players demands unreasonable- we don’t know.
Four fell over at the last stage and without any idea why how can we judge. Spurs got no one. We got three good players for good fees so they are doing something right sometimes.
