Pancreatic Cancer, which was operable but for some **** of a nurse in Leicester hospital neglecting to give her the crucial medication at the specified crucial time put the operation back in time until it was too late and the cancer had just began to attack her liver causing her to lose the biggest battle last May, and me to lose my best mate of 53 years.
It's not getting old it's getting ill that is the b ugger!
1. I’m only fifty one and can honestly say I feel older than I probably should. When I think of my experiences over that relatively short time frame then perhaps I’m not doing too badly when all’s said and done, I won't bore you with the details. Step back, count the blessings you have and tell those around you how much you love them and how much they mean to you. I do this regularly, it doesn’t always help me greatly but the security and assurance it brings them makes me feel better even if only for a moment. Just do whatever it takes. Despite what the god squad says I firmly believe we’re only here once in the conscious state of ‘who we are’ - man.
2. I’m currently a bit overweight but remain active with light weights, floor exercises, rowing machine and punch bag. I still do the above despite having damaged my knee during the summer and being on crutches since December. My knee may take another eight months or so to heal naturally. If not then as my recent escapades follow a series of injuries and general wear and tear I’m looking at a partial or full knee replacement aged fifty one/fifty two. Fk it, I’m lucky enough to have two.
3. Recent blood tests showed my cholesterol and blood sugar levels to be normal. Very few things get up my nose apart from pollen, dust, other people and their general twohattishness.
4. My sciatica eased when I took a more physical job than the one I’d previously had and thankfully my bowels only tend to irritate other people. Life is more sedentary now and my sciatica is an occasional problem for me. This pales into insignificance when compared to what others suffer when I release my rip roaring anal renditions of Flight of the Valkyries.
5. I drink more than I should and definitely more than enough for the both of us. You owe me a fair few quid for taking this responsibility on for you as it hasn’t done my wallet any favours. Despite cutting down generous donations for this ignoble cause would be gratefully accepted as I’ve generally had more good times than bad.
6. The upper age limit is on the rise so cheer up as you may have another thirty plus years in you so try to make the most of what others can’t. When push comes to shove I’m sure you’ve accumulated enough spends to make things comfortable in this respect at least. For what little it is worth I’m absolutely convinced I’ll be gone from this mortal coil long before you despite your extra six years.
7. I sleep very little and rarely remember my dreams. When I do flashbacks related to PTSD are generally my companions. My younger years weren’t always the best so I suppose the PTSD helps to block them out. Swings and roundabouts chap, it’s all about how you view things.
8. I always said I wanted to die young and not be a burden but with every passing day I have a growing sense I simply haven’t lived enough and want to do more before the worms get me. And if I do live long enough then Lottery win aside I intend to work into my early seventies. I’ll probably have to as self-medication and away days don’t pay for themselves. In truth if things were ever that bad I may top myself before flying to Switzerland so someone else could do it for me.
9. Life is desperately precious and although suicide would be against my nature, were I to take that course I’d leave letters for my wife and son after telling them to their faces of my intentions. This would probably wake me up to the moments I'd miss and make me change my mind. If not I’d hate to leave things unsaid and they should have the same opportunity. As for football forums I’ve never really seen the need for grand exits.
Still, each to their own.
Jeez...that was a depressing read to start my Monday off Mick. None of my business but do you think doing loads of running helps if you have sciateca and knee problems? I would have thought for cardio low resistance exercise to be better such as kettlebells or a X-country machine for example? I injured my sacral joint a few years back and it took 10 or so visits to the physio to straighten me out. He did say that running is one of the worst exercises you can do for putting stress on the body and causing joint and muscular injuries so just a thought but I guess you already know that.
57 is still no great age these days mate. I'm just reading Chris Bonnington's autobiography. He was saying he's still climbing at 83. At 80 he climbed the Old Man of Hoy which isn't for the faint hearted despite being only 500ft or so tall. IMHO I think age is an attitude. I used to go climbing and at one point went up to 18500 ft climbing in the Peruvian Andes. Following a lay-off I talked myself in to believing I was to old to start again (I'm 56) but have now decided to get in top shape and do another big climb. Just my opinion but I think a lot is in the head as a generalisation and not withstanding any physical ailments people might have.
It would seem logical that running would cause/aggravate my sciatica but with me it doesn’t quite work like that.
I usually walk the first mile or two and then jog the 2.5 miles home stopping for a few steps every half mile so I’m not pounding out vast mileage.
My knee is a strange one.
I slipped on outdoor wooden steps a couple of years ago and tried to right myself in mid air and landed six steps further down and twisted my right knee before landing further down on hard ground.
I amazed the people with me by retaining my balance but the 8-10ft drop shocked and hurt me.
Bits of loose cartilage showed up on the scan but no ligament damage which surprised me.
Kicking a ball really aggravates is and twisting and turning are to be avoided so my “Michael Owen” routine in back garden football is at an end!
I find I can run on it though,I’m okay in a straight line......I get no swelling either.
I basically “manage” my various injuries but this sciatica has no remedy and I just have to wait until things click back into place naturally.
The knee situation annoys me,I know I need an op but I’m scared of that because I’ve got many friends who’ve got worse knees after going through this. I had both knees done 28 years ago but it’s more risky to get a good result the older you get.
I can still move quite quickly and I think that I could be really s h I t hot at walking football but because shooting kills my knee I’d be like the 57 year old Rondon!
I really do think us lot should arrange a get together,I think it’s be a great laugh given our “black” humour and general views on things.
Agreed Mick a meet up would be a great idea, I'll bring the Voltarol
I’m thinking a non match day Phil and not necessarily by the ground, maybe in a geographical destination that suits attendees.
I’ve done match day meets before now and because venues are packed with other fans I find it just too busy, noisy and time limited.
Maybe a nice country pub one afternoon in the summer?
Count me in
I’ll put a thread up to gauge interest Phil.
